They aren't doing the collisions for a while yet, they have to run a bunch of tests, we have a couple weeks of safety yet. Get some hookers.

heeee hardon collider :D

it's funny because i just got rereading angels & demons and CERN has a LHC in it and now there actually is one but i'm like "what, didn't they have one already?" stupid fiction, getting me all turned around.

they've been working on this for a loooong time... apparently mankind's most advanced/complex creation.

next to cheez whiz of course.

i want to know when they run the first test so i can put some hands over my nootz

Yeah, there are other colliders around but this one is the biggest.

Well... we WOULD have had the biggest & most powerful particle collider, but congress scrapped it in 93. Presently, it's just a big hole in the ground.

bcz mankind shouldn't be fucking around with stuff like this. i don't even know why they'd test it if one of the possible results is a fuckin black hole. ludicrous.... but i guess if nothing bad happens the reward will be pretty great, right?

when's the first collision ? sometime in october ?

Fucking with the building blocks of REALITY is pretty fucking dumb, IMO. Barely over 100 years ago we couldn't even fucking fly.

We tore apart an atom barely over 70....

    We're fucking retards.

hey having our existence torn apart in the name of scientific advancement is MUCH better than two "elected" morons in suits pushing their Big Red Buttons

oh yeah and vonk that shit about the SSC is awesome/tragic, i wanna play hide n seek in it

what would the rewards be anyway? my hadron collider information is all based off angels and demons, and that doesnt sound like a good idea. blowing up the vatican and all that :(

haha tugg i read on CERN's site that it's actually impossible to create that much antimatter (it would take millions of years) and they have no plans to use it for energy because the cost to create it is farrrr higher than the money it would save.

      fun fact! hehe

yeah i went mythbusting after i finished rereading this time and looked up a bunch of stuff about CERN, st peter's basilica (i was there!! woot!!! and it looked nothing like i was expecting it to look after having read A&D, so on this read-through things were a LOT clearer in my head), etc.

oh i guess understanding how the universe is structured isn't very important :p

here's from the wiki since you guys are lazy and i'm not a particle physicist:

      Purpose

When in operation, about seven thousand scientists from eighty countries will have access to the LHC. It is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the last unobserved particle among those predicted by the Standard Model. The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would shed light on the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking, through which the particles of the Standard Model are thought to acquire their mass. In addition to the Higgs boson, new particles predicted by possible extensions of the Standard Model might be produced at the LHC. More generally, physicists hope that the LHC will enhance their ability to answer the following questions:

      * Is the Higgs mechanism for generating elementary particle masses in the Standard Model indeed realised in nature?[7] If so, how many Higgs bosons are there, and what are their masses?
      * Are electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force just different manifestations of a single unified force, as predicted by various Grand Unification Theories?
      * Why is gravity so many orders of magnitude weaker than the other three fundamental forces? See also Hierarchy problem.
      * Is Supersymmetry realised in nature, implying that the known Standard Model particles have supersymmetric partners?
      * Will the more precise measurements of the masses and decays of the quarks continue to be mutually consistent within the Standard Model?
      * Why are there apparent violations of the symmetry between matter and antimatter? See also CP-violation.
      * What is the nature of dark matter and dark energy?
      * Are there extra dimensions[8] , as predicted by various models inspired by string theory, and can we "see" them?

Of the possible discoveries the LHC might make, only the discovery of the Higgs particle is relatively uncontroversial, but even this is not considered a certainty. Stephen Hawking said in a BBC interview that "I think it will be much more exciting if we don't find the Higgs. That will show something is wrong, and we need to think again. I have a bet of one hundred dollars that we won't find the Higgs." In the same interview Hawking mentions the possibility of finding superpartners and adds that "whatever the LHC finds, or fails to find, the results will tell us a lot about the structure of the universe."[
