That or she knows the campaign is doomed, and is setting herself up for future runs for office by being able to say "Hey, we lost, but we were following McCain's strategy, which was obviously bad, and here's proof I didn't want to go along with it." Gives her distance and deniability, so that she's not going to be tarred with the same brush he is.

Arlos wins. Palin is being touted by many of these "social conservatives" as the new face of the Republican party. I see it mentioned at least once a day on CNN by someone that they interview from the right. They are making sure that when/if McCain loses, they have her ready for a run in 2012.

I don't understand why anyone would be for her at all. From watching her interviews with Kouric, among others, letting her run things would be like letting that South Carolina beauty pageant chick run the US Educational system. (MAPS FOR ALL!)

Still, I don't profess to understand everything. I mean, for years, there was a significant group of the far right who thought that Dan Quayle was really awesome, and a great presidential candidate. So, since she's basically just the female version of Quayle, I guess I am not THAT surprised that she'd have fans, if he did.
