Off to take the ASVAB...

Post by Harrison »

I'd say wish me luck but, I plan on acing it entirely.

Then I get to choose my MOS...weeeee.

Then all I have to do is pass the criminal background check, physical, drug screen, etc. Then it will be official.

Unofficially scored a 90 AFQT. :hiphop: I get the official composite score Friday.

Highest in the room other than me was a 49 lol

P.S. That's a percentile compared to everyone who's taken it in the national database I was told.

If I remember correctly - and things might have changed since then - it's your GT score they are going to use more so than your overall AFQT in job selection.

I had a 115 GT (that was back right out of high school) and could have pretty much chosen any job I wanted. I think a 110 or above opens all the doors for you...

    What was your GT score?

Obviously, you should choose which ever MOS best suits your wants and needs - but my advice would be to select one that has real world applications after service. They will try like hell to get you in one of the combat arms branches (infantry, artillery, armor, combat engineers), but when you get you'll have practically zero value to civilian employers (unless you get a degree while you're in). And, speaking of degrees - you can do it - but I am here to tell you first hand IF you do choose a combat MOS you'll have a HELL of a time trying to get classes. Your CO will have sign off on it. Most combat MOS's spend a LOT of time in the field, far removed from the class room. And by field I mean 30 day training runs in "the woods." Not saying you'll never be able to do it, many do - but it's much more difficult than if you get a non-combat MOS.

However, also note that choosing a "non-combat" MOS doesn't mean you'll be free from being attached to a combat unit. Commo guys often get stuck with grunt units, tankers, arty and the like. Same with medics. They *think* they're set till they get their orders lol.

I always thought a cool MOS to get into was the 37 series (psychological ops) or the 97 series (counter intelligence).

In retrospect I would have given my left nut to have been a 97B or a 97E. Check those out.

    --edit--

    They changed the nomenclature...

Looks like the 97B is now called 35L http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=144

I've talked this over with my friends who have already served, still serving, etc.

I didn't walk into this blindly at all. I went to school with my recruiter and his younger sister. He isn't capable of dicking me over.

as far as what you mean by GT? I have no idea, really. The score they gave me was my AFQT percentile. I don't get the actual composite scores for a few more days.

If it's what you really want to do, then by all means do it. Personally I think the Air Force is a way better option than the Army, if you're going to go into the military, but that's just my personal opinion. Well, unless what you're after is a line infantry job, of course, in which case the Marines would probably be better still.

The ASVAB is a crazy easy test, as I recall. When I took it in high school, I think I had a perfect score through the first 5 or 6 tests, and the only one I didn't get a 99th percentile on was the one that had had questions like, "Which one of these is a roofing nail". HTF do I know, since I never worked construction. rofl. Anyway, you wouldn't believe how much I got hounded by all the branches after that, up to and including the coast guard. Thought very hard about doing the Air Force ROTC, but the school I ended up deciding to go to didn't have a program, so that was that. Pretty sure that I would have been disqualified anyway, when they got around to checking my knee out, too.

4 years at the minimum. I can always add more at a whim if I decide that I like what I'm doing.

See right there, for you to get educated will cost you 4 years of life, nothing is free in USA my friend :). Then you'll have 4 more years (or less I guess, I don't know how it all works with service and education) at a school.

I'm going to be getting college credits from most of my training anyways. So it's not wasted, plus job experience in the field.

I can still do it, just everyone around me are little bitches. I buy them memberships to the gym I go to, pay their subscriptions, and they just give up like faggots. Everyone around me is so lazy it's sickening.

It's not like they have a fucking life here to stick around for anyways. Sitting around drinking and smoking daily isn't anything to stick around for over a life experience most people will never get.
