soul is really hard to define
the lines between r&b and soul are not clear like they are between pop and heavy metal. many artists could be considered both.
gospel is just soul about jesus

Home Town Girl! I love her music.
For you

Re: favorite soul artist (modern)
i've only ever heard her on hip hop tracks. are her solo albums good? (jill scott)
Re: favorite soul artist (modern)
only jill scott i've ever heard was that wicked mashup with Moby and Blue Man group
Re: favorite soul artist (modern)
her solo music is a lot different than her hip hop tracks. I love it when I'm in the mood for that sort of music, but if you go into it expecting it to be along the same lines of her hip hop tracks you'd probably be disappointed. her soul tracks are a much better showcase of the power behind her voice I think - it's really good chill music.
(ps, this is why I love jango - anytime I have curiosity about a performer I go there and search a song of theirs and listen. ah, internet radio. how I love you.)

Hmm i am gunna throw Rose Royce in this they are from the 70's but they put on a song called Wishing on a Star that has been redone a few times. Personally I like Beyonce's version of this the best. this song really shows how talented the singers that perform it are. imo.
sides it's a good song to play when getting intimate!

Sade
Lauryn Hill (even her "wacko" live recording comeback)
Aretha Franklin
Whitney Houston - Pre-crack whore Bobby Brown
Bryan McKnight - great singer and apparently guitarist also
Boyz II Men was pretty impressive in my book

Soul has just gotten too broad for me I guess
Soul to me is stuff like Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, etc

Sam Cooke>all
he's not necessarily modern though, and if Ray Lamontagne counts as soul, he gets my vote for modern.
