Re: favorite metal bands
this is a great metal band:

Re: favorite metal bands
Without subgenres that piss me off to no end, and in NO particular order:
Metallica
Sabbath
Trivium
In Flames
Killswitch Engage
Those probably gain the most playtime as of late in my Zune.
Trivium's new album is amazing from beginning to end.

bah
sabbath are nowhere near "the best"
their only relevance was that they were "the first"

Re: favorite metal bands
i already know the mainstream bands. the only reason i'm making these threads is because sirenssound broke
give me new music. if it's a "subgenre" it's okay. in fact i'd rather hear more weird subgenres like crust and more post-metal like i already listen to because it's something fresh
new music new music new music
PS: thanks soulslicer and foutty. and harrison for "trivium." hadn't heard that before

Re: favorite metal bands
Tool (obviously)
Dark Tranquility (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKtIYdU3uRU )
Eluveitie (that metal band with folk instruments. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKCLiVH9V-U )
Older Metallica (like Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets/And Justice mainly)
Iron Maiden (especially from Powerslave & Seventh Son)
a lot of old Judas Priest
Dio (both with Sabbath and solo)
System of a Down
Type O Negative
The main theme in all this is heavy stuff with actual melody to it. I can't deal with power noise, or just simply beating on guitars as fast as possible. That's why I also go for a lot of industrial stuff (along the lines of Ministry, VNV Nation, Combichrist, etc.) and goth/darkwave stuff (Sisters of Mercy, some Siouxsie, Gary Numan, etc.)

Re: favorite metal bands
Progressive metal, yes.
Heck, Dream Theater is listed as progressive metal too, for that matter.

Re: favorite metal bands
Tool. Pop.... what the fuck?
Are you really trying to claim that Tool is the same musical style as Brittney Spears, Backstreet Boys, etc? Is that what you're trying to claim here? Or perhaps you mean 80s Synthpop like Erasure or Howard Jones?
Um, OK, there, Sparky. Much less ball park, time zone, continent, whatever, you're not even in the same stellar region there.
What are you going to do for your next trick, claim that the Butthole Surfers are "Ambient"? Or perhaps that the Dead Kennedys were "bluegrass"?
Dislike them all you want, I would never claim that the band is for everyone, but goddamn, at least know what band you're talking about...

and yet it's an insult when I point out you like pretentious music?
Re: favorite metal bands
I think Tool more than most bands set an atmosphere that you normally don't "feel" with others.
*shrug* hard for me to explain but I'm sure most of you get my point.
Very distinct and original, imo.

Re: favorite metal bands
I liked their first album. I didn't keep track of them any longer after that. My tastes changed drastically around that time and I lost track of a lot of music I listened to.
