part of an addiction is the brain physically restructuring itself to "fast-track" the reward system for acquiring and ingesting more of whatever substance/activity you have become addicted to. it cuts off neural connections that make you feel bad for getting/wanting it, and strengthens the connections make you feel good. even something as "harmless" as sugar or caffeine would very likely cause this restructuring to start happening, which could conceivably leave you more susceptible to more serious and harmful addictions in the future.
