Laid off in the last week of August here.

Been looking, I'll take just about anything at this point... kind of depressing to do the math on some of the jobs offered and see that I'd be making in a week what I used to make in a day =\

the local news stations do a nightly "this place is hiring" bit, and it's always really funny and terribly sad to me to see:

Requirements: Masters Degree in blah blah
Compensation: $14.50hr

Not yet, just anxiously waiting, we've closed several plants, cut shifts, having 1 week forced vacation every month, that way by the 3-4th month you'll have to take unpaid, etc.

Some of our larger customers just announced more layoffs in the thousands so . . . to say the least, it isn't looking good around these parts :(

Our business is booming. We have been hiring at least 1 person a week since mid november. We are opening a new office and hiring another 20+ people by the end of February.

What business am I in?

We help people find jobs. We are a nonprofit that uses state and federal grants and private donations to retrain dislocated workers, find employers willing to hire people coming off of lengthy unemployment sessions, coming out of prison or transitioning from welfare to the workforce. As the job market tanks, our business goes through the roof.

I am the senior network administrator. We have 23 locations, a datacenter and about 20 servers that need daily TLC.

sorry to hear about that you guys....

one nice thing about non-profit work is you get your budget early on and for the year ahead of time...

i make much less than someone in the "normal marketplace" but there's a bit of security that comes along with it

i work for a non-profit that starts and maintains free support groups in the Houston area for people with bipolar disorder or depression and their faimly and friends

Yeah, I make about 5-10K less a year than I could in a corporate job but there are many reasons why I prefer the NP setting. The 6-1 female to male ratio is just one of them!

I contacted a place today that is a non-profit but they just moved into a new building and the warehouse needs renovations they plan on putting in a radiant floor which kind of funny the place that laid me off sells radiant floor tubing. I talked with the manager the renovations won't be done till summer

Ive made some spending cutbacks this week and come up with a few strategies in place so we hopefully can make it through the stretch coming up of everything slowing down. Have the greatest shop crew we've had yet, I just hope I can keep all 25 of them in work. Got a ton of patch and repair jobs coming through, so maybe I can squeek through it. Quoted a 3 million dollar order today, and a 2 million dollar order of drives last week, so if that goes through, we'll be set for a couple months work wise. A Looot of companies laying off this week though, like Catepillar, one of their biggest plant and headquarters is right down the road from here, and Is aw that they laid off something like a couple ten thousand workers. Theyre in a different kind of equipment though ><

Our state is FINALLY doing something worthwhile though, saw it in the paper this morning, some guy is introducing a bill that will make anyone applying for food stamps, welfare, or any other kind of government assistance, to take a drug test everytime they get them, and if they fail, nothing. In my drug use times, I bet about everyone I dealt with was jobless and enver planned on getting one back. Theyre getting a free ride to use heir checks to buy drugs, and either use it or sell it. I wish someone would have caught me or something a long time ago and knocked some fucking sense into me. Maybe this thing will actually get some of these worthless people off their ass

I'm really sorry to hear about everyone's misfortune. I'm in the same boat as Toss though, I doubt i'll ever be out of a job. I work at a non-public (which is basically a state funded private school) special education school and sadly the number of kids entering special ed increases every year.

Teaching normally doesn't pay, but fresh out of college with your BA here is 40k, by the time you get all of your special ed certs, you go up another 10k, then my job offers a free masters program in cohorts with George Washington University, that bumps you up another 10k. So if you want to teach badass, crazy-ass kids, there's a job for you. I don't teach here, i'm a program assistant. But even that pays better than the same job somewhere else. It's to compensate for the fact that you may be kicked, spit at, hit, have objects thrown at you!

Ditto to what Haylo said, sorry to hear about everyone's hard times right now. I'm hoping you all find something you really like doing and make lots of money while at it.

I just work part-time for a physical therapy clinic run by the Atlanta Falcons, and so far things look ok. I was just accepted into the nursing program at my college, though, so if I can hold out for 5 more semesters, I'll be sitting pretty.
