As special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell heads off to the region to begin work on negotiating a cease fire between Israel and the Palestinians, President Obama has sat for his first formal TV interview with the Arabic cable TV network Al-Arabiya, ABC News has learned.

The interview was taped this evening and is set to air at 11 pm ET, as Mitchell is in the air and on his way to the region.

Based in Dubai, Al-Arabiya estimates that it has a potential audience exceeding 23 million in the Gulf region.

I don't see this as a bad thing. Workign toward a cease fire between the Palestinians and Isreal is a bit more important than MSNBC's ratings at the moment.

WHOA unnecessary. never have i been as vocal about my political beliefs as others--say, arlos or gyps--and never once have i said that i think barack obama is a messiah (which i actually find mildly insulting as someone of the christian faith) or have i expressed a desire to fellate him. ew. yes, i think he's the right choice for our country and i think he will do some amazing things. i also think it's far too early in the process to be making judgment calls as to whether his choices so far have been "asinine" or negative in any way. think about it: we all thought bush was the shit after he held it together in the weeks following 9/11, but that obviously turned out to be a fluke and he did some pretty stupid things in the other 7.5 years of his presidency. point is, give obama a chance to succeed or to fail before calling it one way or the other. the guy's been in office for a week, for crying out loud.
