i don't need to pretend about anything. everyone she knows loves me, just like i love them. i don't have brothers or sisters. i have a couple close friends but as far as family, hers is the closest thing i've got at this point besides mom & dad, and they accept me. i live that culture
every day of my life now. i have to weigh her beliefs and lifestyle (communism and nichiren buddhism) with mine (drugs sex and alcoho -.-) 100% of the time if i want this to work. sorry you're jealous or something

but i'm happier and sleeping and eating better than i ever have in my life
@vonkaar: pho's pretty good but i dunno it's kinda weird. most of that food is weird. chicken feet? pig stomach?

cool once a year i guess. bo xao xa ot (lemongrass beef!) and that caramelized bacon are awesome tho. video games sound awesome in the end
@gaazy: you're totally right. sorry i spouted off about it but i mean it's like brinstar said. he's a soldier now. why can't he clean up his vocabulary? i hold people like him to a different moral standard because every soldier i've ever met or known (like my friend that apparently ate human flesh when a car bomber blew himself up in front of his turret) is an incredible person in every aspect. and that's why i never say racist terms. ever. but it sure feels great to be "racist" about racists for some reason

you can draw some sort of weird parallel about me being as bad as him. i'm definitely as serious as him. but morally i don't feel egotistical or arrogant whatsoever about making fun of a racist. racism is just F-ing pointless. period. and i have no problem fighting for that belief
Lol @ jealous. Yeah totally dude. You go from OMG RACISM YOU ASSHOLES, to making jokes about rape to me being jealous that you love Vietnamese culture. Not off base at all bud. You're pretty hard to understand but I think I've got you figured out man. You're one of those insecure kids that has to live through his partner. Like you're gf's asian so you have to pretend to be. Like out of the blue you post Vietnamese language and watch anime. Cute. I suppose if your gf were an artist you'd be foaming at the mouth on NT about how great Picasso was. It's all good though bro, I'm happy when anyone's happy. I just hope next time you see a thread like this that you're dating someone who knows how to take things with a grain of salt and next time you wanna get all emo rage that you date someone who knows how to chill the fuck out =P
god, it always turns into a finger pointing thing with people like you. youu act sooo much better than me, but then you take it to a ridiculously personal level where you're trying to tell
me who I am? well, sorry, but i've already got a strong sense of who i am and what i want to do in my life. and i don't need to justify those interests to you. but, i'm going to. and take notes, because i'm gonna do it with tact and without stooping to your level and insulting you
-i'm about as far away from living vicariously through her as i can be. yep, i've been to a couple parties now after 6 months of dating eachother, can speak about 5 phrases, and know how to cook two dishes. in fact i don't even think i've started to talk about her (here on NT) until within the last month or two after i was sure we weren't breaking up and we'd gotten through the awkward first stages of the relationship. if anything i'm the douchebag asshole that's not caring enough about her and trying to just AMericanize her and make her forget her culture. like her sister's boyfriend that doesn't even want her nephew to learn vietnamese. he's just like "yeah whatever he doesn't really need to know that" but i'm not gonna start talking about douchey Americans :p
look, anyone that's posted here should know that the culture I care most about is Russia. I've already talked enough about that over the years, though. I can already speak that language, play its classical music, and cook its food. So now I'm moving on to new territory and learning about asian culture. adding it to my repertoire. sorry

but you just can't make me feel bad about educating myself
-i don't know why anime's a surprise. well, maybe because i've never really talked about it, but i've mentioned berserk before. i've been reading those books for two years now. my roommate showed em to me. my girlfriend's never seen or heard of it. i tried to introduce her to it but she said it was stupid. she watches tom & jerry and looney tunes and stuff. and i think she watched Doraemon when she was a kid or something /shrug. and her favorite artist is Dali, since you decided to bring up high art. we look through my Dali coffee table book pretty often
-if we broke up i'd probably in the end just be relieved that i don't have to try to deal with a communist on a regular basis anymore. but i'd also be missing out on a lot of amazing things and a seriously solid lifestyle that puts most of the Americans I know to shame. so comprising with eachother every day is really a double-edged sword without a handle that i gotta grip every day. it's give and take.... how a relationship's supposed to be. i almost wish it were as sad and pathetic as you just described it dude. i really do. a lot of the 18 and 19yo students that hit on the asian girls at parties are exactly like that. they just want it for the novelty. but unfortunately i'm a realist, and i realise that balancing two lifestyles is really Fing hard and this is the most demanding/rewarding relationship i've ever been graced with
just take leah's advice and don't talk about something until you're sure about it. that's probably some of the best advice anyone could ever give to anyone
