$14,000 for allowing cover bands to play at your establishment?

The RIAA needs a swift assassination. I am not joking either. Kill every last fucking one of them.

I understand the sentiment. I'm not a fan of cover bands myself.

I don't know how these assholes got away with what they're pulling, though.

I have no idea how that could happen

that being said

Cover bands aren't all bad

we heard a really awesome band playing some pink floyd stuff a couple weeks ago

just amazing

I'm not a floyd fan, not even vaguely, but hearing it live was awesome

Cover bands destroyed the only bar I could stand going to around here. They have turned me bitter to the whole lot.

what's the diff?

is "tribute" the term that defines those really crazy cover bands that try to dress, look, talk, act, etc., like whatever they're copying?

Yeah, I think that's the defining line.

Cover bands don't always stick to a single band to cover too. They'll play a broad range of music, and throw in a mix of their own.

Someone said earlier in the thread, and it's largely true, that people want to hear music they already know when out at a bar.

They didn't come to hear YOU specifically most of the time.

ah ok

i love cover bands then. especially if they're covering material from stuff i could never see live. i prefer to hear music live and as loud as it possibly can be. i'm not the type of person that listens to my music on low volume so i can hear idiots around me chattering. and i feel totally deprived that i didn't get a chance to see real rock 'n' roll when it was live and it was new—cover bands are as close as i'll ever get

I'm just glad I got to see Black Sabbath as close to their "original" as possible.

Ozzy live now is amazing. I can just imagine what he was like 20 years ago.

I still have not had a chance to see Metallica live :(

I saw Ozzy live back in like 89, I think it was, just shortly after Zakk Wylde got the guitarist job.

I've seen Metallica live too. Couple times, though one of them was an all-acoustic performance for the Bridge School Benefit concert back in 97. Odd, but interesting. Oh, and for Brinstar: I saw Soundgarden live back at Whitman College when I went there in like 1990, just shortly after Louder than Love came out, pretty much.

Tributes are a cool thing, but they can be overdone...there are some musicians here locally that put on tribute shows every few months or so, just to have an excuse to play some good music or work on projects with friends.

This month, they are doing the Weezer tribute show, to the Blue album. good stuff.

you have to have a license if any live band plays any copyright song in your public establishment... this is nothing new and has been enforced ever since they started required performance rights.

you also need a performance license to have any music (including radio) in a place of business

the hippies live on folly beach, mostly. which is where I live now but those two things are not related.

that's just the history of that beach, since the 50's. always will be.

downtown and the other areas of charleston are as diverse as any other place...bars cater to everything here. have a friend that is in dental school that plays bass for a jam band...not my thing but whatev.

I will have to ask him where he works, not sure of the rest. he is at. But i know he loves it down there, nonstop talkin about how fun it is and how much he likes the food there. He also likes that jump little children band and I remember him telling me thats where they are from, im not a fan though, but knowing him, thats prolly one of the reason he went there lol.

and damn, I thought the bachelor party was this spring, but its NEXT spring :( :( :( I had another buddy that had one last week in Windsor, Canada though, but there was no way i was taking off work to go to Canada.

but this weekend I was in Greenwood, SC at this buys place. How far are you from there? nice little area~ Was a nice change in temperature! I loved that 80 degree sunnny days

I love JLC, they are called "Jump" now. Well they are called nothing now, cause they aren't a band anymore. Jay Clifford is solo and tours with some of the guys from the band with Slow Runner sometimes. Their bassist was the bassist for JLC in the day. ha, I was at his house the other day! Zach Braff produced Jay's recent video for his new song (well in the last six months or something, maybe longer. ) They are from here, still live here!

Interesting stuff...if you've heard of The Avett Brothers, whom I am CRAZY about, Slow Runner is touring with them next month! If you don't know the Avetts, you should, cause I think you'd dig it. It's an alt-bluegrass type of music, they are crazy-talented.

Small world.
