i wish to be able to access a dedicated file storage drive on my desktop via my laptop on any network anywhere
is this:

- secure
- a good idea

VPN server. You connect to the VPN and you can then access your home network as if you were on the network.

and the "p" in vpn is for "private," so it will be password-protected and, thus, safe.
