earth is similar to an organism in the way that if you consider an organism, like a person, is an ecosystem in itself. i've read that there are something like 4 foreign cells for each cell of your own. then there are carbon/water cycles and all that.

The idea that we are arrogant enough to try and wipe out a species that may play a vital role in the food chain in areas where it evolved without knowing what the repercussions might be is ludicrous. That kind of arrogance is why so many native species around the world are being destroyed or replaced by imports that have no native predators.

Controlling mosquito population within a city, maybe I can see. Going out into the countryside and trying to wipe it out completely, hell no.

Can this not be used to describe and define earth:

Can this not be used to explain humans and the role we play on earth:
an organism that lives on or in an organism of another species, known as the host, from the body of which it obtains nutriment.

If you say one or both are false and can provide a reason why you think they're false, then we have a discussion, if you just say no, they're false but provide no factual information, then you are an idiot. I don't see how you could deny it.

I don't really get what you're so worked up over to be honest Harrison.. in every sense, we *are* akin to a parasite when it comes to our involvement on earth.

The definitions aren't proof per se, but do demonstrate precisely how that idea is reached. Whether or not you believe the earth is an organism, we would fall under the second definition, 2. a person who receives support, advantage, or the like, from another or others without giving any useful or proper return, as one who lives on the hospitality of others. Organism or not, earth could easily fall under the category "another."

There's really no need to back into your defensive corner with the "hurr you are stupid and I am superior because I do not use contractions" crap. It's opinion. You don't feel we're parasites, but by definition many feel we are. Personally, I think it's pretty blatant fact, but I reckon it could be up to speculation. It's pretty simple, really. Is The Earth alive? Probably not as we normally think of the term, or at least not in any way we can fathom. However, I don't think you or anyone else can argue that it is made up of a complex interconnected web of systems and processes, that work together and interact in ways we don't even begin to fully understand yet. The earth is teeming with life, down to the smallest microbes, and almost none of it (and certainly the part with which we interact with day to day) developed in complete isolation. Interrupting or destroying parts of that interconnected web of life can and likely would have massive unintended consequences that we simply don't have any idea of at this time, since we don't begin to fully understand how everything interacts.

Also, I don't think it is in question that WERE The Earth some giant organism, that we WOULD be classified as parasites. Look at how much in the way of resources we pull out, how many of the other ecosystems we disrupt and destroy, how many other important species we marginalize or destroy. And what do we put BACK into the system? Waste, trash, landfills and plastic. Right now humanity has only 1 home, and we're shitting all over it. We don't even have the sense of most of the wild animals in that regard; you don't see them shitting in their own beds or nests, do you?
