Upon doing a surveillance report over a cigarette theft in the convenience store next to the casino here, I learned that a carton of Marlboro Reds is $45.90. I was pretty surprised how expensive they were since it was at Native American smoke shop price.

Why don't we tax gas to $5 a gallon nation wide, that would do wonders for the financial problems.

Oh wait, they tried that and it backfired and pissed off a ton of people.

Gas is a necessary commodity required to commute to work, and for just about every industry. That said, they do tax the bejesus out of gas already.

The Cigg tax is high, but really it's a luxury tax. The two aren't comparable.

I dislike any tax, but I like the idea of programs leveraging their own cash, such as SCHIP using Cigg taxes. Cap and Trade likely will hit gas and power companies if it passes. I'm not sure it will now, though, since a few slip ups and 2010 could hand the house to the GOP.

Speaking of which, Hi Gidan and NT. Hope everyone is well. Even the Canadians.

They should bump the taxes on alcohol up about 5 times what it is currently so it costs $5 for a bottle of Budweiser.

Did you honestly just try to compare cigarettes to gasoline?

Wow.

I don't know what to say if you can't see a difference, even there.

(though semantics doesn't change anything about the ludicrous comparison between a tax on a relative necessity to that of a tax on an entirely stupid "luxury" that kills people)

Gas is a necessity while cigarettes are a luxury, I can see that. What I was trying to show is that when Gas prices went through the rough, people found a way to use less of this necessity. If cigarette prices did the same, even more people would find a way to do without them. You would bankrupt the tobacco companies and in the long run you would hurt things more then help them. You wouldn't see this massive increase in tax money since the number of people who would stop purchasing it would more then offset any increased profits you would see from it. In the end, you would receive less total tax revanue while at the same time bankrupting some rather powerful companies.

Not to mention, there would be many VERY cranky people around :)

We should tax food with over a certain amount of carbs, cholesterol and sodium too since that's bad for us. Hell, lets tax anything that's remotely bad for us.

Actually in California, Cigs have gone up a considerable amount. I'm a former smoker myself and I don't believe taxing the crap out of them will help us as much as it will hurt us. Basically I agree with Gidan but also as I stated above, it's a principal thing. Where does it start and stop when we tax anything that's frivolous.

the only thing it does is help us imo. i know a lot of people that quit smoking recently because it's become too expensive to maintain. i'd love if they made them illegal all-together

so that they are forced onto the black-market and taxpayers foot the bill for enforcement/incarceration? no thanks. if the taxes go to something good like schools or education, smoke up. unless you're smoking a pack per day $5-6 is not much when minimum wage is ~8.00+ it amounts to about 1 hour of work after tax.

Aye, making them illegal would be just as futile as the banning of pot currently is. So long as there's restrictions preventing people from having to inhale second-hand smoke, that's all they need to do. Would be awful hypocritical of me to want to make tobacco illegal while I want to legalize other things.

The simple fact is that banning intoxicants of any kind that people want to take simply doesn't work. Period. You ban tobacco, and it'll just generate a criminal organization dedicated to its sale and distribution, create a whole new class of criminals, increase violence, etc. No, it's a monumentally stupid idea.
