Just got a BMW SUV. The guy asked us if we wanted the extended maintenance, which covers oil changes, tune ups etc. We started asking questions to determine if it was worth it. He said you only have to change the oil every 12,000 miles. We said, "if an oil change is only $30, and we only have to do it every 12,000 miles, why would we pay a couple thousand for two years of maintenance and he said, "because the oil change on a BMW is $400."

Is there any truth to that? Can you just put standard synthetic in it?

Yeah, we were like, "how is it possible that an oil change costs $400" and his reply was, "because it's a BMW". And then he was like, "and because it's every 12,000 miles instead of ever 3,000 miles it's the same". Amd I was like, "if the average oil change cost $100 dollars, which is four times the amount of an average oil change". And he was like, "well...just think about the extended maintenance".

And then the "finance" guy tried to talk us into the clear coat. It was straight out of that scene in Fargo.

I own a BMW, not the x5 though. An oil change roughly runs me 80 bucks when done by a BMW certified mechanic. I think what the guy was referring to was a service package that can be done at the dealership which includes oil change for around 400 bucks OR you can get the extended service to not have to pay that much. As far as the extended service goes, it varies from dealer to dealer. I've heard people say it's great but I fucking hate it the customer service sucks here.

It's included until April 30 2010 and $1800 to extend it to April 30 2012. It's not something we want to work into our monthly payments because I don't want to pay interest on it (even though it wouldn't be that much) so I'll just fork over a check for $1800 come April 2010. It covers everything except for a flat tire.

But it still would have been worth it without the guy telling us an oil change costs $400. The combination of the average cost of tune ups, brakes, oil changes alone makes it worth it without the guy having to resort to a ludicrous extreme.

we got extended warranty on our Elantra we bought last summer

8 years of bumper to bumper, and 8 years of roadside assistance

was around 1200 bucks. just looking at average maintenance costs, we end up coming out ahead a couple hundred bucks


when I bought my Jeep, the extended warranty was just garbage, kinda like the BMW offer you got

I'd check on how many proprietary parts BMWs utilize and the availability of aftermarket parts. Nothing like having to fork out $75 for windshield wiper blades (Land Rover Discovery Series III) & then installation with their proprietary fucking tools -.-

there's always the chance that he was new and legitimately had no idea what he was talking about or misinterpreted what the guy training him said. I mean [I would hope] most knowledgable people aren't going to try to swindle someone with something so outrageous when pretty much anyone can find out the average cost of an oil change for any car. I mean you'd have to be an idiot to try and dupe someone there - smarter to pick something a little more technical that laymen wouldn't understand usually.

I own a 325ci and I recommend getting the extended service plan. Anytime your computer light says bring me in everything is free. My service plan has just recently expired and the computer reads 200 miles till the next service.

It costs $600 for the yearly service around here.

Yeah, we'll get the service plan. With my luck, any time I try to skimp out on insurance or warranty's or service plans, I drop my cell phone in a toilet, I put a wii mote through a TV or I blow a transmission.

The square back on the X5 is extremely boring. The Lexus takes number 1 in the aesthetics dept, imo. And I never thought I'd ever say this, but the new Chevy Equinox looks pretty nice too, and I can't stand GM products. The Subaru Tribeca looks pretty cool from the side and it has an incredible dashboard too, but the back of it is pretty squared and boring.
