We're getting an SLI camera. I really don't want to spend a ton of money. Maybe $600 max.
After doing some research, it's a toss up between an Canon XSi and a Nikon 3000.
Couple questions. Is it worth getting a bundle kit, which comes with the body, lens, bag, memory card? Or is the lens, bag, memory card crap and I should buy the stuff separate from the body?

Went with the Cannon. After talking with my dad about it he said he has three insane Canon EF lenses worth like a grand he can throw me if I bought the cannon. So I bought the cannon.

good choice... canon seems to have a lot more saturation (market) so you can find good used addons easier than with Nikon

i got the same camera with two lenses... great pictures but use a small one for snapshots

My Wife and I just bought the Canon SX20IS and it is SLR "like" takes pics about .25 to .5 seconds apart, does HD video, as a 20x zoom, 12.2 mega pix, uses digix4.0, it was 349 at Costco with a 2GB memory cards, free shipping.
I wasn't sure how it would go over to be honest because most of the cameras we've had are the really basic point and shoot type devices. This is not that type but can be used like it.
I was also really impressed with the video, I was expecting more cell phone like / stop motion almost type video but it was smooth, kept focus, etc.

with and SLR i hear it's better to get the Nikons with like 6 megapixels. that's what the photography teacher told kim, anyway. nobody even needs more megapixels than that unless you're putting your pictures up on a projector or something. all megapixels mean is what resolution it takes the photo at
for instance i think my camera has 7 megapixels but i take photos at 1600x1200 because i've never needed them any larger really. that means it's using 2 megapixels, rather than 7 at a resolution of 3072x2304
i don't honestly see the need for anything with more than a few megapixels unless you're a professional
the quality of the photo itself is more dependent on the camera parts in particular, like a shitty lens etc.. thus phone pics suck, because their lens is about 5 millimeters across. a 35mm lens on an SLR will take awesome photos everytime
bottom line? DSLRs are pretty much all the same. buy whatever company you'd rather support imo

Yeah there really wasn't much of a difference between the Nikon D3000 and the Cannon XSi. I got the Cannon because my dad has a few really nice lenses he can throw me for nothing. The lenses aren't universal.
