A friend's 911 experience

Post by KaiineTN »

About a month ago, a friend of mine had been having bad headaches and went into the ER to figure out what was up. It was misdiagnosed and continued to get worse.

Fast forward to now, headache gets so bad that she said it felt like she was beating beat in the head with a 2x4 repeatedly. Thought she was going to die, called 911, was screaming in pain with a cop that beat the ambulance to her house. Got loaded up on heavy pain meds, and had brain scans done and what not. Neurologist said she had damage to both arteries in her neck, close to her brain, too close to operate, and that they were getting clogged while healing and it was essentially a stroke waiting to happen. Neurologist mentioned something about her chiropractor incorrectly cracking her neck that was likely to have caused the damage.

Now they have her on a bunch of meds/blood thinners, taking shots twice a day, seeing a doctor three times a week, etc. I'm worried about her, because it sounds like that sort of thing would be difficult to prove. How would you approach a situation like this? Should the chiropractor be responsible for all of her medical expenses? Is it impossible to prove and thus a futile effort?

If she can prove it I would sue that chiropractor for a lot more than medical expenses.

I would be shocked if she hadn't signed a waiver from the chiropractor originally.

That being said it's the american way to sue the shit out of people for whatever so go for it

Moral of the story:
Go to the fucking doctor's office, not an ER. Here is why insurance is so high priced... too bad she didn't die, funeral would be cheaper in the long run...

ps
I really do not wish your friend dead, it isn't her fault. But it is fun to be a dick every now and then.

Well, a lot of people go to the ER outside of their regular doctor's office hours figuring that they'll get better care through an ER than a doc-in-a-box places.

Tough call about the friend. I feel people get a little sue-happy at times, and the frequency of law suites against health care professionals is ridiculous. It feels like people view doctors as a get-rich-quick scheme, and it is also a contributory factor to the rising costs of health care. However, that being said, there are instances where it is absolutely justified. As to whether this is one of them? I don't feel like there's enough information or evidence one way or another.

And hey, aren't all you anti-health care reform types all jisming yourselves over Tort Reform as a fix for everything wrong with healthcare? So isn't suing for this against your philosophy?

PS I hope your friend ends up OK.

At least he knows his friends aren't using him for money or some sort of employee discount from his job.
