This is why I get discouraged when I play video games. Genetically I just can't compete.

The key is to be able to focus solely on the portion of the screen that is important at any given moment. If you try to take in the whole screen, analyze, and react, it's overwhelming. Once you have weapon powerups you can just typically spam the fire button without even looking at what you're shooting, and only pay attention to dodging projectiles.
