does anyone here do any paddling? (canoe or kayak)

Postby Tikker » Mon Mar 29, 2010 10:33 am

I'm looking to pick up a small watercraft

family sized, and something that's mostly just used on relatively calm lakes with the occassional river tossed in. I won't be doing anything more hardcore than class III stuff with this boat

I've been looking at http://www.seaeagle.com/ExplorerKayaks.aspx

specifically the explorer 420

What is your question beyond whether or not I paddle?

I would never use an inflatable in anything but the stillest of waters.
They handle like bathtubs due to their contact points & finish.

http://www.eddyflower.com/ShowBoat.aspx?BoatId=295 is my river kayak. Dagger RPM Max. I have a skirt & 6 air bladders for it.

My lake kayak is a 14' open top molded plastic deal; great for still water days.

I'm looking at picking up an Old Town Discovery (flat transom w/ mounting plate).

i don't think he wants somethign that hardcore tho

a friend of mine recently picked up a kayak that's built for stability with an indented arch running the length of the boat's bottom. pretty much impossible to flip and lots of interior room for daytripping gear like cameras and lunch etc

i know you can get those recreation kayaks like my friend got with one or two seats so it sounds like that would be perfect for you

i'd stay away from canoes personally but that's just because i don't like them. one of those stable-bottomed kayaks are much better imo

I've been hitting up the Boundary Waters and Quetico the last two times I was in the States. My cousin and I went in for 9 nights last summer. I absolutely love it up there, and can't wait to come back to the States for another trip =)

My canoe is old as shit and haven't looked into new ones.... so no advice ...

I'm waiting for Harrison to post that he's training to paddle across the Atlantic this summer in a kayak.

Since I posted this I've started the Churchill river system, as well as paddled kicking horse pass in Golden BC

the boat/raft/kayak I bought (the one I linked) will do class 4s easy, and I went thru a pretty good stretch of 5's with it slightly modified (had to have some extra inflation in bow, and extra port/drain holes installed

it's also an amazing boat for paddling thru shallow wetlands

when you get into places other boats go, and you see birds that have never seen boats, it's neat. they get curious and paddle right up to check out the hull
