my old receiver gave up the ghost, and I went out and bought a new Pioneer VSX-521 one
it's a pretty basic unit (i'm not an audiophile) but had everything I needed. multiple HDMI in, supported the audio formats I had, etc
the issue I've run into is that the old sub just had the 2 stripped wires you clamp down. The new receiver is looking for an RCA style plug
do I need a powered sub? or can I just solder on a RCA plug onto old wires(and if so, does polarity matter?)
I think I need a new Sub-woofer

eh, it's an rca cable
or are you one of those guys that need $200 monster hdmi cables too?

Re: I think I need a new Sub-woofer
Your receiver doesn't have a dedicated amp for the sub so yes, you need a powered sub.
Re: I think I need a new Sub-woofer
Another option would be to buy a cheap mono amplifier, run the RCA cable from the receiver to it and then hook up your existing sub to it.
Depending how nice your sub is, it might be worth it to invest in something like this.

It's cheap and puts out a decent amount of power when bridged to mono for sub use. I've never used the product or the brand but the price is right. Otherwise, a new, powered sub can be found for pretty cheap.

yeah, there's nothing special about the sub that came with the last receiver, so I'll just buy a powered one and be done with it
