So we've been teaching Lexi to say her prayers at bed time. Last night, her prayer almost brought me to tears because it was the most precious thing I've ever heard. She clasped her hands together and said, "God... thank you for mommy, daddy, omi, opa, maggie (my parent's schnauzer who she loves), brother, sissy, auntie Sandy... Amen". It's not just the prayer that was so cute, it was the heartfelt emotion behind it. It's also like she understands already that she's praying to a higher power... like she gets the concept already of God. Amazing kid.

in all honestly i'm not 100% sure how to classify myself these days, although i did indeed grow up LCMS.

Sometimes it's hard to believe when your life is going shitty, or when you see in the news about a child getting some horrific disease, or a school bus full of children dying in a crash, or mothers who kill their babies, and on and on... That's what makes me occaisionally question the existence of God, yet something in my conscience tells me that God is real. I feel it in my soul. It's kind of difficult to articulate. I'm kind of in a downer mood this morning. I think it has to do with watching the reality show "wife swap" (no not the porn) last night. It was a conservative Christian family who swapped mothers for a week with an atheist family mother. I don't have time to get into the details (maybe google that episode) but I can tell you this... I haven't been a combination of that level of anger and sadness in a long time. I was disgusted with what I was hearing come out of the atheists' mouths. I'm not saying they are bad people, but it was painfully sad listening to them. I just don't get atheism. Agnosticism I can understand.

Not sure. Existing in another dimension, waiting to be born? I really have no idea. That's another unanswerable concept. Same with ghosts or apparitions. I've never seen one, but millions of people around the globe have, and I know that those people weren't all just hallucinating or had some kind of paranoid delusional psychosis or whatever.

Atheism and agnosticism are not all that different beyond the stigma attached to the term Atheism. The primary underlying difference is that one denies the existence of any god and one just has no theist loyalty in particular or hasn't ascertained their stance on whether or not that higher power exists.

I didn't watch the episode because I fell asleep, but I did hear the intro to the show (because I was watching One Born Every Minute prior to it coming on), and you really need to take into consideration the extremes that show goes to when selecting families. From the brief bit I heard, the Christian family was way overly devout, and the Atheist family was just as involved in preaching their beliefs. One is not any worse than the other.. they're equally guilty of being overly preachy and pushy in that instance. I don't want religion pushed onto me, and likewise I don't think an atheist should spend their lives trying to convince others that God doesn't exist. People will believe as they believe, and while civil discussion is just fine, there's no use trying to force your beliefs onto someone else.

That said, atheists have the right to spread the word of their beliefs just as any religion does and I don't see much sense in getting infuriated over it unless you're going to get equally infuriated at the spreading of God's word.

I'm an atheist, but I assure you there is nothing empty or lost that should sadden anyone for me. I feel quite fulfilled in my life and don't find solace into putting my destiny in the hands of some higher power. On the contrary, the notion that there's some master plan that I have no control over is quite a sad one to me, and in that sense I don't get religious zeal either.

I do understand that everyone needs something to believe in, to hope for, to strive for.. a moral code to live up to, a reason for being. Personally, I find my solace and reward in the tangible. You find yours in a higher being and the belief in eternity after judgment day. I don't concern myself with the unforseeable and unproven eternal because I concern myself with my time on earth and enriching my life here. That you believe in God doesn't sadden me, and my lack of belief in any god shouldn't sadden you.

There are a lot more tragedies in our existence to be angry or concerned about than wasting energy on getting "angrier than you have in a long time" over someone's belief system, but that's just my two cents.

A lot of those channels TLC, Learning Channel what not, are very right wing, so it wouldn't surprise me if they had a bit of a pro-jesus slant.

Don't know anything about that specific show though, because I have good taste.

The possibilities are endless. I just mentioned one of them. There is an "unknown" in science... something unexplainable. That's part of why Einstein said "The more I study science, the more I believe in God." He knew there HAS to be a higher power, because some things that exist cannot be measured or calculated or explained. I'm not a scientist, but I feel that same concept.
