Mass Effect 3 out today

Post by Arlos »

Just got it, started playing it, only like 10 minutes in. Seems good so far, not that it's an exhaustive sample.

If you care about where the video game industry is headed you'll never buy another EA/Bioware game.

I got the collector's edition so no sweat off my back.

I don't get the big deal about all of this. Consumers are just butthurt because they want the extra content to be free simply because it came out the same time as the base game. Well the last time I checked the company sets a price on their product depending on the demand of said product. Bioware felt that the DLC was worth being paid for separately from the game itself. Is Bioware greedy and trying to make money? Fuck yeah they are. This is business. What are they supposed to do, hand out free content that they spent thousands of dollars on development hours for?

The only way to convince Bioware that this is not a good plan in the future is to lower the demand for their product through boycotting (which they are doing). Except you know the problem with that? Everyone will still buy the game and the DLC. Supply and demand. Bioware is simply making a smart business move.

That's a nice justification for a nerd who want's his shitty game. No sweat off my back, since bioware makes crap now days anyway.

Like I side, every developer is looking at how they are raping people, and they'll all follow suit. Next? Content on the disc that needs to be paid for to unlock. I guess this is just another sound business strategy right Griever.

Enjoy your over priced collectors edition, Griever. Better yet, enjoy the world you helped create.

If the consumer continues to pay for it, yes it is sound strategy. We only have ourselves to blame. When we do not pay for a product a business is forced to change their strategy. The numbers of people who buy Mass Effect 3 and the From Ashes DLC will either support their new strategy or if discourage them from doing this again if they do not see the numbers they predict. Either way it is all up to the consumer. I don't know how you can blame a company for trying to make money. If the From Ashes DLC was released a month from now everyone would be buying it and nobody would be bitching.

And you saying Bioware makes crap now is only a matter of personal opinion. You could even say that your opinion could be proven false based upon how many people are willing to pay for their games. Success is determined by sales in the game industry. Your elitism serves no purpose in this conversation.

I don't solely blame them, I also blame shills like you who buy over priced crap. Their business practices are outrageous and you're a moron for complying. I think it goes further then that though. You're making the world a worse place to live in by buying their day one DLC. You're making rape possible.

Do you own any Apple products? Apple pretty much made popular the business model of releasing an electronic device and at the same time a large line of accessories that enhance their device. Many companies subsequently mimicked this business model including Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony. Can you tell me that you do not own any devices and accessories that might fall into the category of this business model?

Bioware's strategy is no different than Apple's or many other companies business models. It might just be the first company to do it on this format.

If you want to talk about a real problem it is games like Call of Duty, Battlefield or Madden. These are games that are recycled year after year with minimal content updates and still charge $60 for consumers to purchase, which they seem to do happily. At least games like Mass Effect give you an extremely generous amount of content for the $60 you pay. Bioware probably put more work into their $10 DLC than any amount of work that is done on Call of Duty year after year.

I was going to get this ASAP, but now I won't be buying the game new, specifically because this DLC business is such a shifty cash grab on Bioware's part. So grats on them for losing any profits from me.

This actually is a big deal and needs to have a backlash in terms of boycotting either the game (buying used works, as they make no money) or at least the DLC. They have purposefully lowered the quality of their product and removed basic content simply to milk people for more money while offering literally nothing beneficial in return. This is unprecedented. It needs to be snuffed out before it becomes the new norm.

I think it's acceptable to have day 1 DLC that is free via redeem codes for new copies but costs people if they are playing a used copy. But Bioware is charging everyone. Lame and shitty.

If you think you'll like it, buy it. If you don't then don't. Any other factors like "your fellow man" is just simply being over dramatic. DLC is a choice and not a requirement. What difference does it make I it's available now or 3 months from now? Mass Effect 3 will still be Mass Effect 3 without it. I understand why someone would choose to boycott it but calling someone a moron despite Bioware having a rep for quality games in the past being a contributing factor to this sequels purchase is just you trying to push your bitter ideals on others. Be happy you even have a CHOICE to increase your games replayability after you'd already spent your 60 bucks.

You're no different pushing your centrist apathy on people, on you add nothing to the conversation. The outrage is warranted and the reason you don't care is because you want to play the game. If this was a game you had no interest in you'd agree. Bioware doesn't have a rep for quality in my eyes since the decline has been pretty dramatic since the first Knights of the Old Republic game. You act like the DLC is extra, when in this is case it's not. It's game content they excluded and charged more. Choice? Yes I'll make mine from the get go. Enjoy the decline of the gaming industry. I'll content myself with knowing I wasn't part of the problem.

not sure i buy this analogy. releasing accessories alongside a product is not the same as releasing content alongside content.

edit: and though i do not feel quite as strongly as he does, i am with zanchief on this one. carving a slice of content out and selling it separately just because you know the fanbois will gulp it down and ask for more is pretty shameful.

Actually I've never played a single Mass Effect game. I missed the train on both that and Bioshock because I was either buried deep in work, Street Fighter or WoW. I did play SWTOR for a moment and if that's like Mass Effect, then Mass Effect is at the very least a decent game. I suppose you could argue that I don't care because I'm playing Street Fighter x Tekken and it's going through the same issue, but that's not it.

My argument is based simply on value. Skyrim took me hours upon hours to beat. If they'd released a DLC day 1, it wouldn't have changed that. I still got my moneys worth without the DLC. If I wanted more, I'd have the option to pay for more. If I thought day 1 DLC's were bullshit, which I do to some extent, then I'd simply not buy the DLC and enjoy the game I bought for 60 bucks. I still got hours of enjoyment out of it. I still got an ending. I still got closure in the final moments. Day 1 DLC and cash milking via extra content doesn't affect that. Of course, this argument can't end since I'm seeing it as glass half full and you're seeing it as half empty.

Bottom line is, I get why you would choose not to buy in, and I think you're being way over dramatic. If you, or anyone really, are a Mass Effect fan, and you're boycotting over this, that's fine. That's your right. You might even have a point. You might see it as making some sort of statement towards the gaming industry and helping your fellow man. I see it as your loss. Going as far as berating and bashing the people who are making the choice to purchase a highly anticipated title is just a show of your bitter unwarranted anger,

Again with this claim about extremism. I'm not like Mindia, Jay, because I back my shit up. You don't like it that I have a prickly personality sometimes? Move one. Stop playing nursemaid to these people. They don't need defending from you. You aren't making any plea for reason here, your making pleas for ignorance, as long as people are nice to each other. You don't care about the content of the posts just that people should get along. It's really lame.

Griever's a big boy. He doesn't need me to defend him. I just like pointing out how little of a person you become when someone's opinion doesn't match your own. It's impossible for you to make any semblance of a point without verbally assaulting them, undermining their intellect or simply mudslinging. That's Mindia to a tee. That's you to a tee. At least Mindia is apologetic and doesn't have the arsenal of clever retort that you do. That in fact makes you worse.

I don't care if people get along here because we already do get along. This isn't about everyone else and how they interact or my plea to push any beliefs on people. I welcome differing beliefs. I totally disagree with Brin on his thoughts towards #occupy, but I respect him just the same. This is about you. You and the fact you can't seem to stay on topic with anything in a civil manner. I'm not asking you to change, since I don't have the ability nor the right to change you. I can only see through your shit and point it out, which I'm doing. It's not about the extremism in your views, it's about you being full of yourself and explaining your views like your opinion on a subjective matter is only disputed by morons. GG Mindia.

day one DLCs aren't right. it doesn't even make sense. if it's day one, put it in the game. bioware and maybe a few others practice this. i don't buy any of their games because like zan said, they've sucked since KOTOR. i don't like playing straight lines. i don't have the imagination i did when i was 12 either so a good story doesn't sell anything, especially when i feel it's poorly acted and generally contrived like most of bioware's material. jade empire was awful. i played the shit out of dragon age once but can't even play a second character for 15 minutes because i know it's going to be the same. i don't wanna pay $60 to play something once. that's ridiculous. and i would sure as shit never pay another $10 or $20 for DLC on top of a $60 game ON DAY ONE that has no replay value

things like street fighter that release a barebones version, then release "super" a year later with 20 more characters is more viable. because you had to wait a year. i still hate it, and i still think marvel vs. capcom 3 was bullshit because they removed tons of characters from MvC2. but then ultimate came out and now i love it

i just can't get behind day one DLCs. it's a pathetic business practice. who the fuck can even beat the game or enjoy it at all on day one. why not wait a month or two to quell the public outrage about it

So I finally got around to playing the multiplayer and I found myself really enjoying it. It is 100% a timesink, but you need to have a good team with good teamwork to be able to clear all 11 waves and I only played on bronze. If anyone wants to play some matches my gamertag is Sever47.

Game was fun, and quite in the Bioware tradition of good stuff. Unlike most games I've bought this one was worth the coin.

Man, the ending sucked IMO, though. Thoughts below:

Spoiler for :
First, it took way too fucking long. Second, the kid being the catalyst in the Citadel was just awful. It's like they spent a ton of time on the first 90% of the story and just mailed in the last 10%.

I had shades of War of the Worlds every time I saw one of the Reaper Destroyers. The child in the forest part still makes no f'in sense. The KL fight was a huge disappointment of the epic level of stupidness of Darth Maul standing there being chopped in two.
What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step.
