Ransomware

So I somehow got my pc infected with Ransomware.

Anyone know of a good malware/ransomware removal program that I can download?

Norton's not cutting it.

It's fucked up shit. Restore from backup or system restore.

Some asshole at work infected a few folders on one of our file servers. I had to restore the files from backup.

I think I got it cleaned. I was able to do a workaround to by restarting the computer, try to open up as many programs as possible before the malware locked up the computer again. When I went to shut it down, the malware would be minimized so I would cancel the shut down when a prompt comes up if I want to close the programs.

I did a norton scan, a norton deep erase scan, and I downloaded the 15 day trial of malwarebytes and it took took care of the root kit.

So far so good.

Aren't the files still encrypted though?

Some of them don't encrypt the files, they just rename them by putting some random character in the front of the name, and set them as hidden system files, plus set them all to read-only. Got hit with one myself a few months back, and was able to get rid of it, but did have to do a system restore.

Girl's PC got hit with this today. I'm doing a System Restore right now. I'll nab Malware Bytes.

Not sure why I have Microsoft Security Essentials since it's a POS and missed this....

i can't believe people use any sort of security system at all aside from malwarebytes and spybot. i hope you aren't paying money to have your system bogged down by useless programs!

What could I have done to avoid the ransomware on Girls PC? Microsoft Security Essentials is free. I have the free version of Malwarebytes which I fire off every so often. I checked a few sites, and it looks like this guy has hit just about every security version out there.

The ransomeware thing was annoying, but as I keep backups I just wiped and restored and voila, all gone. My main personal box is a Fedora 16 one where I keep all my important files, and I do all my downloading via it. I have yet to have a hiccup on Linux in 10+ years of running it, outside of the tragedy that is running Unity and/or Gnome 3.

there's basically nothing you can do to avoid ransomware other than avoid places where you can't accidently download it
