As far as small-town cops are concerned, we really don't have many in Oregon. I think Veneta had one cop on duty 20 years ago, not sure what his hours are now. Where I grew up (Pleasant Hill) didn't even have any cops. Only highway troopers, very rarely. Now this happens apparently. How sad is that? Read, but read past the timber cuts section to the assault/rape. Could you even imagine that if you called 911?

In the absence of emergency services, what options did this woman have for safeguarding her own well-being?

In essence, what could she have done that might have resulted in a different outcome, perhaps one in which she was not brutally raped?

It's tragic and sad -- but this is the kind of thing that happens when (metaphorically) you put all of your eggs in one basket.
