Considering I have at least a 100 gay friends if not more, it makes a big difference in my life. There's lots of happiness and celebration around town these days.

I could care less about Gay Marriage the issue and I'll be the first to admit I'm a tad homophobic. Gay Marriage regarding social benefits, inheritance, and government benefits should be the law of the land. It's an idiotic issue to be divided on, regardless of ones 'morals'. We legislate based on fairness, and what should be criminal, and this is a non issue. My only concern would be the lawsuits that will inevitably be foisted on churches who refuse to wed gays as being 'bigoted' due to their belief in the sanctity of traditional marriage, but most churches have too much money anyways so a few lawsuits won't hurt.

It's interesting to compare and contrast the current laws regarding marriage to the early struggles to institutionalize it during the medieval period, when concubinage was a popular option among the ruling class, and there was no issue of remotely equal moment to the issue of hereditary bloodlines and inheritance.

A key difference betwixt then and now being that the need to define it is no longer solely consigned to king and pope - the struggle to establish heredity legitimacy lacks the primacy it once had, and so now in the present, the commonfolk exert pressure to make it suit their own ends, instead of royalty and clergy doing it to suit theirs.

Given it's history, I'm not surprised at the level of fervor some have to keep it unchanged and "pure" -- but I think it's fascinating to observe the evolution of an idea like this.
