You are wrong. Socialism means everyone pays taxes and the money from these taxes go to pay for social (community funded) infrastructure. A good example of socialism in the US is public schools. Now I'm not talking about how bad they are or how they badly managed I'm talking about how they are available to everyone and you don't pay for it out of pocket other than your taxes.

There is nothing wrong with socialism when it is managed properly. People in US have been trained since the McCarthy era to fear Socialism and associate it with Communism, but they are not the same every country in the world is partly socialist including the US and every one of us enjoys the benefits of Socialism daily. Imagine if all the roads were Toll roads, not having Police, Fire department, public schools.

The issue is that many times these programs get misused and mismanaged, but the same can be said for programs that are fully capitalist like Insurance, for example - it's great until companies decide that paying off on the claim is a loss instead of policy holder's right and start coming up with excuses to avoid payments. Many countries use social insurance for Healthcare and advanced education and I wish we were smart enough to do the same here

gaazy, in order to understand socialism you have to look at the word itself. it's a social thing, and it's based on the idea that if everyone shares a little of what they have, we can accomplish a lot more together than any of us could by ourselves. i can't build a road system or a power grid, mindia can't pay a police force, kaemon doesn't have the resources to make sure the food he serves his customers is safe to eat, etc - so we all come together and give a little in order to get that shit done. it works pretty well for the most part.

some people don't have much, so they aren't expected to give much; some people have a lot, so they are expected to give a little more. though the current tax system is way too complicated (and people with powerful lawyers and accountants are able to find loopholes they can drive their dumptrucks full of cash through), the problems arise when certain people feel like they're being asked to give too much, when CERTAIN PEOPLE don't/won't/can't understand how they benefit from institutions that everyone in the state/nation helps pay for (and thus convince themselves they shouldn't have to participate), when the people we put in charge of running these institutions are inefficient or fuck up/abuse their roles, or when wealthy people use their political influence to chip away at the portions they're expected to share.

100% socialism is a rather bad idea, and virtually every single time it's been tried on a large scale it's been disastrous. yet 100% capitalism is also a terrible idea, because unchecked corporations will literally grind into dust the very workers it depends on if it means squeezing out one more stock point.

in my view, the best system is a hybrid of the two, where workers are protected from predatory employment practices, public services are robust and efficient, no one suffers from unemployment, lack of access to basic health care, nutritious food, or dignified jobs that pay living wages, and private enterprise flourishes in ways that harm no one. it can be done!
