Ouch, Doom3 High Graphics choppy

Post by Lyion »

On my 2.6 P4 w/ ATI Radeon 9700 Pro at 800x 600 Res.

Medium plays well, but the graphics aren't nearly as good.

Buy yourself a better heatsink and overclock your processor... might help a bit.

I'm debating nabbing a 6800

I'm just not sure how big a leap it'll be. I'd rather not get a whole new rig.

Supposedly... it's pretty freaking huge. One review (tomshardware, although they are nvidia biased) said that it is another 'monumental' leap... like the TNT2 to Geforce256, or Radeon8500 to 9700. Those comments, along with my recent researching... has pretty well led me to believe that I need a 6800 =/. I might just scrap everything and go fresh... new Abit board... Atlon fx53... I'd have to get another mounting plate for my waterblock so I might wait a bit... but otherwise, we are good to go.

I found a guide for you... I'll make a new thread.

Lyion your system, looks like the same setup I have, and I'm running it at 1024x768 at high setting, with AA at 4x (although it's pointless due to the doom3 engine), VSync, and all other adv graphic setting to max. No chops at all for me. BUT, if I set up to ultra high, I cant even get away with 640 resolution.

Ive got an AMD Barton 2500 same as Vonk (stock speed for now until I get a new heatsink/fan)

1.5gigs of ram at 333Mhz (also stock until I decide to mess with my multipliers when I overclock my processor)

And the kicker is I have an overclocked geforce3ti500, Im hurting for a new graphics card bad.

Im wondering how it will run on my computer. Are the graphics options very tweakable? Or just the "high, ultra high, low" generalizations?

There are set "low/middle/high/ultra high" and then there are a few "advanced" options such as Vsync, Antialiasing, Buffering, Complex Shadowing, etc.. Actually it's not nearly as tweakable as UT2k4 for example.

Haven't been dropped to desktop at all. What Catalyst drivers are you using?

Check these out -- Some new 4.9 beta ones released specially for Doom 3.

Downloaded and installed them. I have a 9700 Pro, so not sure if it doesnt like me using high settings or what.

Thanks for the link, Rotj

No drops here. In fact, I've been able to up my graphics with some minor tweaks, and it is running flawless.

I uninstalled my old drivers, and installed these beta ones, and I've had none. Plus, it seems to be going a bit faster.

I played a good 3 hours last night. The voiceovers really give a great sense of immersion. If EQ2 is nearly as immersive, it'll be nice.
