Can't upgrade IE 5.5 to 6.whatever

Postby Ouchyfish » Sun Aug 22, 2004 12:06 am

I recently had to reinstall Windows and ever since I did I have been unable to get IE upgraded to the new 6.whatever. It starts to, thens ays it cant finish, try closing some programs. Nothing is open! It still tries to "finish" every time I reboot too.

Tried it in safe mode but it didn't work. Is there that big of a security increase in upgrading to 6.? or should I just stay at 5.5 and leave it alone?

Thanks.

Windows ME btw..yeah i know shitty dippin OS but it worked fine before the reinstall..=\

Are you trying to update it using Windows Automatic Update? The deal where it downloads as it installs?

Or have you downloaded a stand alone .exe or .zip of the upgrades?

If you haven't I would try the latter.

Then it could be any number of things. Is it the correct install for ME? If you've double checked and you're sure you have the right file, and your antivirus isn't running while installing, then I would say with 90% certainty the file was corrupted in some way when you downloaded it. It's happened to me on more than one occasion.

Ive NEVER had a problem with windows ME. And it's supposed to be this big shitty OS.

I do like my xp pro exponentially more, but I loved ME as well. (Blazingly fast on games, only 98 beat it on speed)

XP is just sturdy as fuck (in my opinion)

As far as the IE upgrade goes, I NEVER upgrade it. Everytime I do, something fucks up somewhere down the line majorly and I have to reinstall. (As a result of the IE upgrade)

Id just stick with 5.5 if it's stable for you and isnt causing a problem.

I thought there were some serious security holes in IE 5.5? I know that are some web site that require 6.0+ in order to view them.

On a second note check out Mozilla

http://www.mozilla.org/

It's a safe, simple, and easy browser to use.

Firefox, not Mozilla. Mozilla itself is bloated and cumbersome compared to Firefox.
