Ok, I'm looking for a complete asskicking system that I can buy.

My Dell is closing on 18 months and I'm looking for something that'll last me the next 2 years and kickass on the plethora of new games. The abject hatred for Dell I've seen has caused me to look at other sources.

Presently, I'm using a 2.4 P4 1 gig RAM, ATI 9700 with 7200 WD HDD with 8 megs/cache.

What I'm looking for: 3.4+ P4 or Athlon equivalent, Ultra 6800 or ATI x800 256M.. Nice storage management.. SB Audigy. at a decent price.

And I wouldnt mind a really nice 21" monitor, too!

Any ideas?

Hmm, I can build a system, but the object is to get something uber with good support that will not interfere with my limited free time.

I've not had an issue with 2 Dells over the last ~4 years. I want something uber that will not have issues, but if it does they'll take care of it ASAFP.

Check the local chop shops, a good one will build one that's better than dell and support it as well.

You don’t need support if everything you buy comes with a warranty (the parts that is). If you know enough about a system to build one, then you certainly know enough to troubleshot problems that arise.

Save your money – build you own.

I can get something from Dell Outlet for the same price as building my own. Why would I want to waste the time?

Dell uses integrated and refurbished parts.

Most of their hard drives aren't covered by warranty because they are refurbished.

They run slower due the integrated parts.

No, they run the same speed as similar computers.

Their hard drives are included in their systems warranty. Its on their website

My Dell clocks identical to my friends homegrown system of the same specs, so that argument is nullifed. Its not running an integrated Video Card or Sound Card, so that also isn't true.

Their motherboard is ASUS running an Intel 925x chipset.

Techs do not support your argument, Marty. Sorry. Show me benchmarks.

It's your money and time... you asked and people gave your their opinions. If you really want to spend the money on a warranty you'll probably never use, and or for a bunch of extra software you'll probably never use, or even want... then go for it. Personally, I would never buy a pre-built computer - not when I can build something better for much less.

Every component on my system is covered in by it's own warranty, thus if something goes out - all I need to do is send it back and wait for a new part. If something goes out on a prebuilt system you have to send it back, wait for them to fix, and have it sent back.

/shrug it's a matter or preference... I think you'll find that most people on this board, who have some fairly indepth computer skills, will build their own system over buying a prebuilt - that should tell you something.

Well, as I've said I've built several systems, and generally its just buying components and plugging them in. its not like the OLD x86 days! I built my 386, 486 and early Pentium models.

The problem I have is I can't find wholesale prices to build one cheaper than buying it. I dont like buying from pricewatch vendors, and everyone else is close to retail charges.

I dont trust the nickel and dime shops, and the bigger ones aren't really a good deal.

I'll do a bit more research. I'll see if there's a better option.

dont buy an alienware. especially a laptop.( i have desktop and it only took me 6 months to get a full refund on my laptop)

How do you know if you buy one PC every 2 years?

And I do not mix business and pleasure. I have friends who work for small shops, but I wouldn't buy from them, as I might have to kill them if it's a lemon.

Dink shops are like buying from used car shops. I've been in them, I've seen them, and the chance of problems bother me.

I'd consider slapping together my own if I could get it cheaper <with XP, mind you, I don't pirate software> and if I felt comfortable with the setup.

I'm not too happy with Dell's recent business practices, and I'd like another option, but it's somewhat of a pain to find one.

So basically you are saying you don't trust your friends to build a decent system? If they are decent systems, you aren't willing to buy a computer from where they work even tho it adds to their job stability?

You're losing me on the reasons here. Either where they work sucks, which isn't a "good chop shop" like I said. Or if they are good you aren't willing to slap your money down anyplace that a friend works?

I'm not talking fly-by-night places. I'm talking reputable ones that have been in business for years, that have a good customer base, that do the repair and build work for most of the businesses in your area. You know, small business, the cornerstone of America?

Actually, the simple truth is if I pay 2k on a PC I don't want to pay state tax. Especially if I can get free shipping.

Although if I could get a good enough deal, I would. Unfortunately I haven't been able to.

I don't 'buy' from friends often because thats a good way to lose them. If you feel you got ripped off, or if it turns out to be a lemon, it could sour a friendship.
