Browns news - DARC check this out

BEREA - Running back James Jackson verbalized his ``I want out'' demands, saying he'd rather play in the Canadian Football League than sit on the Browns bench.

Linebacker Brant Boyer, the Browns' special teams captain for the past three years and their most versatile backup, was placed on injured reserve with a broken right foot and will miss the entire season.

When that possibility was raised two weeks ago, Boyer said, ``I don't want to think about going on IR. If I do I won't be a happy person. I'm not ready to trade in my cleats for some pompoms.''

If that wasn't enough for Browns coach Butch Davis, he still had to deal with the fallout of quarterback Jeff Garcia's postgame complaints Saturday. Garcia said he hasn't played enough in the first three preseason games to get the passing game in synch.

All in all, Monday did not seem like a happy day in Berea.

The most stunning words came from Jackson, stuck behind the dynamic duo of Lee Suggs and William Green.

Jackson, who played for Davis at the University of Miami, would like to be traded to the Miami Dolphins or anywhere that he can see extensive playing time in his fourth NFL season. Last week Davis told USA Today that if he couldn't get at least a third-round pick for Jackson, the Browns were better off keeping him.

``The thing is, they don't want to play me here,'' Jackson said. ``If they don't want to play me here, I don't want to be here. I know I haven't been treated fairly here.

``It wouldn't be healthy for me to be here. It wouldn't be in my best interest or their best interest for me to be here.''

Jackson said his unfair treatment started before Green arrived in 2002 and Suggs in 2003.

``Indeed. Definitely. It goes way back,'' Jackson said. ``Everybody wants to sit and say I'm having a great preseason. Go back and watch film. I've been doing this since I've been here. Great preseasons.''

Asked if he'd had enough action to establish his fair market value, Jackson said, ``I honestly don't care. I can go to the freaking CFL as far as I'm concerned.''

Davis spoke only briefly about Jackson, cutting off one question in midsentence.

``I know James is a competitor and he would like a bigger piece of the pie,'' Davis said. ``Certainly given the depth of running back, every single guy when they've gotten their opportunity has played well. I'm sure it's frustrating.''

As for Boyer, Davis said the decision was based on the medical staff's estimate that Boyer might not be able to return until the Oct. 31 bye week. Boyer fractured the fifth metatarsal on his right foot in an Aug. 6 practice against the Buffalo Bills and had hoped to return for the third week of the regular season.

``They had X-rays on Friday and according to the doctors there had not been any significant healing. The crack in the bone was still evident,'' Davis said. ``It's difficult to play seven games short-handed.''

He said he expected players such as Barry Gardner to step up in Boyer's absence. But the Browns' third-year linebackers -- Andra Davis, Kevin Bentley and Ben Taylor -- have lost their mentor.

``He taught me a lot in the two years I've been here. I'm going to miss him,'' Bentley said. ``His experience is invaluable to us. He's played 10 years. There is still so much we haven't seen.''

The biggest story nationally was Garcia, who said after Saturday night's 21-19 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs that throwing six or seven times a game wasn't enough for him to get on the same page with his receivers. The Browns play host to the Chicago Bears in the preseason finale Friday, but Garcia expects to play little.

``Jeff truly wants everything to be perfect,'' Davis said. ``Those traits, his leadership, the passion he plays (with), that's why we wanted him to be the quarterback. That's what training camp is all about. We've made some strides. We're not where we want to be in every phase, but we're going to get better.''

Davis wouldn't say whether he would accommodate Garcia's request to play more than usual against the Bears.

``We're practicing to get better as a football team,'' Davis said. ``Every week there's things we want to accomplish.''

That picture just screams Ray Lewis..

Anyways, I'm curious if the Browns will trade Jackson. They're really screwing him out of his prime...

Jackson sure as hell changed his tune this week, and i cant say i didnt see it coming a mile away. truth be told ive been more impressed with jacksons playing then greene's. Greene may be a more talented back, but he doesnt have half the drive jackson seems to impress, and it comes across on the field. Its almost like Greene is complacent where he is.

i cant fathom WHY davis isnt playing garcia more. He needs the playtime to get everything synchronized. that's so painfully obvious from watching his snaps. baltimore is going to be one sloppy ass game.

its a bummer im gonna miss the chicago preseason game. My roommate is playing a coffee shop in aurora and i cant miss that.

ps. there is gonna be one hell of a party in cleveland when modell dies ^_^

edit: I wish i could speaking in pictures like the Dabu from Planescape.

Davis isn't playing Garcia because Holcomb is his boy. Butch needs to get canned if the Browns lose several early games due to the offense not being on the same page. There is no excuse with him giving Holcomb the Lions share of the snaps, especially since he isn't new to the system.

The problem with playing Jackson over Green, is Green is SO much more talented than he is. However, Jackson is the better team guy and why in the hell wouldnt you trade him for a 4th rounder? Not like he's going to do anything riding pine in the third string spot.

Living near Sandusky I seem to get a decent range of football games. It sucks that Buckeye Cable doesn't have an NFL package plan, those bastards.

I agree with you on the Butch Davis thing. There is no reason this year not to atleast to have a positive win / lose ratio. if he cant get past personal preference for the good of the team, fuck him, lets feed him to people in southern ohio.

Maybe Davis is banking on either greene fucking up out of game again or one of them going on injured reserve. i guess time will tell.

The whole offensive scheme isnt making any sense to me. They are playing our main wide recievers less than they are playing garcia. Andre Davis has had one reception so far this season. Quincy Morgan has had all of two. makes no sense to me. we have the weapons but we arent giving them play time.

Hmm, that would make sense. Is Greene still with his psycho girlfriend? Even with Greene out, Suggs is the clear #2, and really a threat for #1. Jackson at best will be the backup. Get some picks for him!

If Garcia plays one quarter in the final game, and Holcomb is in there for 2, we'll know Butch has screwed the pooch.

The WRs definitely need more time with Garcia. Baltimore will be scary if the offense is as out of sync as they have looked in the last few games.

i can totally see davis holding out on jackson simply out of fear that they will be left with one running back for the whole season.

i think garcia needs a good three quarters atleast. they know the starters and have made the cuts, they need to let the primary offense run for the majority of the game.

Holcomb has the worst stats out of the three, he's gotta go.

He lives in PA, close to Pittsburgh (where I want to be) I *think.* If so, he's probably a Stealers fan... calling a Stealers fan a Browns fan is like calling a ... well let's just say it's bad... very very bad.

We're almost exact equal distance between Baltimore/DC, Philly, and Pittsburgh.

I have no hopes for the Browns for the next 5 years at least. Love them to death and watch all their games, but simply put, they suck horribly and I'll be happy if they win 5 games this season.

Its tough to understand the Ohio/Michgan rivalry without living here...

I bet Davis plays Garcia less than 1/2 the game...Also, I agree that he'll hold on to Jackson, despite the fact the Browns have a lot of needs and could get a quality player for him. Davis needs less power....
