College team obessions
I never understood the obession some people have for college teams of colleges they NEVER attended.
There's a few guys working for the same company I do that are fanatical Georgia Bulldog fans... yet they probably have no idea where Athens, GA is, much less ever stepped foot in a UGA classroom.
If you're a graduate of that school, attending that school, have attended that school, or possibly having a kid attend that school - then maybe I could understand being a fanatical fan. But, ridding around with Ohio State bumper stickers, dressed in Ohio State clothes, and memorizing years upon of years of game stats of a team of a school you have no / never had any affiliation with - is... well... a little odd.
/shurg maybe it's all good... I still think it's a little odd.

Same reason it's semi retarded to root for a team that isnt in your state/area if you ask me...
I.E.
Massachusetts residents who have never set foot in new york cheering for the yankees. (that's about the most extreme example possible, for obvious reasons)
Yankees fans get shot here

How do you like this spoiler, motherfucker? -Lyion
yea i always root for a CA team such as Cal and USC. And been a fan of Miami following DJ. WIlliams careers, and Oregon following a former classmate Jared Siegel the kicker.
I would say i am a Notre Dame and USC fan for the most part tho. I grew up watchin ND, and SC is a state team so
I watch all the games i can tho for the hell of it. I love watchin them cause either they are great close games, or the ranked team kills the unranked and i get to watch alot of points scored.

I discovered football when the Niners were on top (mid to late eighties). They became 'my team' before I knew what a fair-weather fan was =p. In the early nineties, it was sort of fun to be the Niners fan at all of the NFC games... in a room full of cowboys fans. As I learned more and more about the game, it became obvious that it would be hard (and more than a little stupid) to stay loyal to a team in a city in a state on a coast in a timezone that I've never been to =p. Sooo, I keep it simple. I'm from Dallas and the teams here are 'my' teams. I'm a huge Mavs fan (surprise), a great fan of the Stars and a blooming Cowboys fan.
Also... I like UGA because my brother was an art professor there for a few years and it's the only SEC school that I'm overly familiar with... so... they are fun to follow =p. Otherwise, I stay out of College football and focus on basketball... go Texans ^_^.
I've never known a single person from Nebraska but I saw plenty of cornhuskers bumper stickers all over in the nineties. I don't see them as often anymore, which is good. Fair-weather fans suck ass. Fair-weather fans of a team they've never seen are even worse.

I went to Texas A&M and University of Michigan and I'm an Ohio State Fan, why? lived in Ohio a long time and its a feeling that washes over you the pride in having national uindefeated cham, pions in your back yard. Im also a Browns fan because I love the underdogs and I love to go watch them play. I used to have season tickets and being in the Dawg Pound was a great experience. Same with the Indians. THey suck as a team, but having sat next to a guy who saved my life by catching a fly ball headed for my face, it just brings a whole new meaning to the word FAN. Its like meeting Sheryl Crow in RL, even though you never really listened to her music before, you become a fan after meting her in a WAl MArt.

Fucker never listens to me. That's it, I'm an atheist.
Anyways, what does it matter? Being a fan of a school you didn't attend is no more odd than spending hundreds of hours in an online game, IMO.
No, that's not my point, Lyion... I'm an Ohio State fan, BUT I'm not a fanatic about it to the point that I own several ball caps, have bumper stickers all over my vehicle, and know every stat of every player from the past 10 years. THAT's what I'm talking about. You go to work and see these guys who are absolutely fanatical about some college team... a college team of a school they probably don't even know the location of. These are the people I don't understand. I don't know, it just seems a little off to me is all... not saying it's a bad thing by any means... just weird maybe.
Diekan, its about it being a hobby. The similarities to MMOs are there.
How many people in EQ or another game know the stats and other misc worthless bits of info ten times over? Tell me that isn't just as weird as a guy who lives in Podunk and loves Podunk U? Apples and Apples to me.

I have been a 49er fan for my entire life. From the first game f the 1980 season. My parents bought 50 yardline (8 rows from the field) and 10 (9 rows from field) yardline tickets when they were 1-15 i think in 78 or 79.
have had them since. So back in the day i got to see alot of games. I saw the "Catch", the 3rd and 47 to 1st down, "Catch 2", The Stand which is actually the Stand 2 cause of the 2nd superbowl against Cincy and the goal line stand in that.
I am still a big fan but not what i was, cause of new management.
I was a bulls fan until they broke up the big 3, during all this i was a kings fan (hometown team) since 93, but rooted for the bulls when they played the kings.
Then became a big time fan of Sac after that break up of the Bulls.
I HATE the Cowboys and Raiders. Used to hate the packers but don't anymore. I hate that pussy Troy Aikman the most, "oh no i have a broken nail i need to sit out a couple games".
And i hate Collinsworth just cause he is a fuckin dipshit. And he was a bengal hehe
I still root for Jerry Rice, still my favorite player of all time.
