I doubt he'll get back on the field this year. Best case is he'll be available next year.

Someone at work was saying that the reason he came back was because he was jealous he didn't get as much publicity as Barry Sanders when he pulled the same stunt. I thought Barry Sanders retired after a season, not during practices.

and never will be

when ricky can make a 9 yard loss into a 75 yard touchdown after making all defensive players miss 2 times, then he will be (aka barry sanders, who i still think was the best ever, cause he did all that with NO offensive line. But him with the 9ers or Dallas during the middle of his career i bet he gets 2500 yards every year for like 6 years)

He's basically said, too, that if the Lions had been willing to deal him to an actually GOOD team, he'd have kept playing, he was just completely sick and fed up with being the only option the team had.

Yeah that was kinda bullshit and cocky of him to say that, I lived in Michigan at the time. LOTS of pissed off people.

yea wel kizzy, like i said earlier if he was on the 9ers during the 90s 9ers would have won almost EVERY super bowl. how would you beat a team with Steve Young Jerry Rice, John Taylor (only player in NFL history with 2 90+ yard TDs in a game), Barry sanders and the defense they had then

What barry did allowed him to be cocky

i have heard so many damn reasons why he left ... it sucks he would have the rushing record and emmitt woudlnt' be close right now

The problem with being a great player on a great team is you lose opportunity.

In the 80s, Roger Craig was not a slouch at running back. Sanders was great, but for the 9er O he would not have been a huge upgrade. Craig could do everything, and was a good all around back. I believe he was the first 1000 yard Rusher and reciever. Not sure if Barry could've done that.

Sanders was great, no doubt. Moreso because he played so many games where teams put 8 in the box, but I think if you move him to a team like San Fran, he loses something special.

Also... San Fransisco didn't have a front line built for a running game. "West Coast Offense"... remember? A better comparison would be Sanders in early 90s Dallas sans Smith. THAT was a rushing O-line.

I think roger craig was a betterwest coast running back than barry sanders. When they tried to stick a full back in the back field in detriot it usually slowed Barry down.

Though I do think Barry was by far the best player I have ever watchged

yea i didn't think about that. Roger Craig was probably the best OVERALL running back of all time... until Faulk retires and Priest.

But i will say with Rathman bocking for him, they could have just put Rathman as a reciever put him in motion near the TE and block on a sweep and stuff like that

No he is 3rd overall... Joe Montana, Jerry Rice then him

Roger Craig? He's lucky if he's top 25. And then you're saying FAULK AND PRIEST? both better than payton, sanders, jim brown? put the crack pipe down man.

didn't say they were both better than payton and sanders

i sam sayin recieving backs...

Roger was the best overall as in great at all aspects of a running back. there is more to running backs than rushing for those that don't kno.

Barry was the best rusher

Faulk probably best recieving

Jim Brown isn't only the greatest running back ever...

Not only the greatest offensive player ever...

Not only the greatest FOOTBALL PLAYER ever...

He ranks fifth on my greatest athlete of the 20th century list.

There are plenty of other great backs, but he's in a different league. If you wanted to argue Craig for best back 'besides' Brown, I'd still say you are smoking crackrock but at least you could come up with some sort of credible argument. Craig couldn't block, rush, catch, tackle, run, eat, fuck, piss as far and won't even outlive Jim Brown. Argue Roger Craig vs O.J. and... we'll still shoot you down but at least there is a comparison.

This is like arguing Clyde Drexler over Wilt Chamberlain.
or
Brett Hull over Wayne Gretsky.
or
Evander Holyfield over Ali.
or
Rafael Palmero over Hank Aaron.
or
Arnold vs Me (bodybuilding).

back on topic...

Ricky Williams sucks.

I still say you can have a viable argument about Barry being the best running back ever. He's really the only one you can argue might be better than Brown, as far as I'm concerned. Sweetness was awesome, but even he'd have told you he wasn't as good, OJ wasn't as good, and neither was Emmitt, who benefitted HUGELY from that early 90s Cowboys O-Line. (a 90 year old grandmother could've piled up 100 yard games rushing behind that line)

Roger Craig WAS very good, and was indeed the first person to ever get 1000+ yards rushing and 1000+ yards receiving in the same season. He was a good blocker as well. That said, that still doesn't put him into the Brown/Sanders class. I do agree that Sanders would have been unreal in the SF offence, if for no other reason than SF had SO many other weapons, no one could stack 8 in the box against them. I mean, you had Rice in his prime, you had Brent Jones as TE option, you had Young, who was a HUGE running threat himself as well as being insanely accurate throwing, you had Rathman as a great receiver and blocker, etc. Toss Barry into the mix, and he's going to get huge yards because the defense can't even remotely key on him, or they'll get slaughtered by one of the other options.

Steve Young was my favorite player for most of the 90s. You remember that season where he caught 2 of his own deflected passes and ran them in for a touchdown? Twice in the same season? That was quite own.

Steve Young could've been a Hall of Fame caliber running back, if he'd gone that route. He was that good a runner. He just happened to be even BETTER at throwing the ball. Gotta wonder at his career stats if he hadn't a) started out in the USFL, b) been stuck in Tampa for years, and c) been the backup to the greatest QB in the history of the game for several MORE years. I'm really glad he got his Super Bowl ring as a starter.

To think... he didn't even pick up a football til his senior year in high school.

He's the last living direct descendant of Brigham Young too! What a stud!
