No Open Beta for WOW?

Postby Lyion » Mon Oct 25, 2004 6:19 am

Read on another board that some people at fileplanet are claiming there will be no Open Beta for WOW. Curious if anyone has seen anything to validate this?

The way Blizzard is hemming and hawing about the difficulties they are having I wouldn't be surprised.

Whast does Fileplanet have to do with what Blizzard does with its open beta?

And exactly what difficulties are they having Martrae?

I've heard nothing about them NOT having an open beta. The PR guys on the forum pretty much have said over and over again that it's only a matter of time.

What I've read is vague references to how huge an undertaking it is and how it's pretty much ready on their end but getting all the parties involved together is taking more time than they thought. (ie difficulties) I'll see if I can dig up the quotes.

If fileplanet is saying they aren't involved in hosting/signups etc then it's not looking good for it to actually happen.

I read on another board where someone who works at fileplanet said WOW would not have an Open Beta.

I have no idea if its true or not, but given WOWs popularity and the fact they've already given so many a 'taste' with the stress test it wouldn't surprise me.

They don't really *need* to do an open beta. But all an OB could do is help them sell more copies. The way it's looking atm, they're going to be struggling server-side come first week of release. I predict 50% downtime.

Which shouldn't be a surprise. I think no matter how long you go in beta, the early registration issues will pop up and the massive player load will appear.

I bet even with 5 years of EQ experience, the EQ2 ones will also be down 50% the first week.

I still believe there will be an open beta of some sort, even if it's over bit torrent. There will be too much of an outcry seeing as how Blizz has had "open beta signups soon!" on their front page for almost a month.

Yeah, but seeing how bad BT sucks ass for downloads, and the technical glitches I think its a great reason for them to not have it. Can you imagine the amount of pissed off people if they have a 7 day Open beta, and 1/2 of them can't finish downloading their client?

Given they've had 'open beta coming soon' for a month, that proves they are having a tough time getting there. Generally soon is not 30+ days out.

Nothing would really surprise me at this point.

I've never had a problem with BT personally. It hasn't been 30+ days yet but it's been a while. There will probably be a patch (Paladin/Hunter patch) this week, then next week OB.

No, I am Satan.

What exactly am I saying wrong here? I'm discussing something I heard on another board.

There's a lot of preparation going on in many major areas some of which is out of our hands, so we have to receive a green light from all relevant parties in order to go forward.

But that doesn't mean it won't happen soon, just that we aren't able to give any word on it just yet.

Yeah, I think that's basically Fileplanet's way of saying "We had Matrix Online and Everquest 2 betas both this past week, you'll have to wait till next week"

There's no way I can see Fileplanet telling WOW they'll have to wait. Especially if Open Beta is setup for fileplanet subscribers. Especially not for TMO.

Thats way too much subscription cash, I'd think.

p.s. Taxx, am I too negative? Maybe I should be more positive like you.

Right, but I can't see them bumping WOW for The Matrix Online.

EQ2 maybe, but not TMO.

Correct, but Matrix and EQ2 were in the same week. And I guarantee people did get subscriptions just to get into those betas...just as I'm sure people did to get into the WoW stress test.

You didn't need a paid subscription to get ST (if that's what you mean).

I love BT, I have no complaints with it what so ever.

And I can only upload at a max of 40k/s or so...
