I should have quoted earlier, my reasons are simply that my religion is stock locked in like yours, reading scriputres would be as useful to me as if you read "Be Here Now" by Ram Dass. How is my boyfriend an anti-christian turd? He was raised as a baptist, has gone to church his entire life, and has recently had a revived interest in religion and learning about it.

Religion in school isn't a bad idea at all... as long as it's strictly educational and teaches a wide variety of religions, and definitely NOT focus on Christianity or any other, and definitely not focus on the Bible. If anything it should encourage Agnosticism until one can analyze their own values and beliefs and see what religion(s) will best fit their life and taste. Although, I am a firm... "believer" in that beliefs should be the single most individual thing about a person, so conforming to an existing religion seems a bit... stupid, to me. Why believe a book? Why listen to a charismatic preacher trying to get you to believe what he does? Why have such strong faith without considering and giving yourself a chance to understand alternatives? Why be a follower?

If you start them young, say before seventh grade, they will be too influenced by the people around them, if you start them in high school, they will naturally be rebelious and you'll see half of the school studying some Wicca stuff and turning gothic. It takes maturity and an open mind to be able to form independant beliefs based on yourself as an individual. I bet most people who feel so strongly about their beliefs when it comes to religion were introduced to them at a very young age, and were surrounded by people who also strongly believe in that religion. You can imagine what kind of effect this has on the child as they grow up.

I'll agree with this entire post. That's the position I'm at now... a college student learning what I can about several different religions from an agnostic point of view.
As far as the individuality of religion goes, that's what interests me so much about the Baha`i faith. They believe strongly that nobody can tell you what God means... that you must spend your life seeking the answers to the "big questions" on your own.

I disagree. A child can make the decision to love and accept Christ at a VERY early age. So, why deny them the opportunity? It's not fair. Like I said earlier... just because YOU don't believe in Jesus does not make it right for you to deny your child(ren) the opportunity to get to know Christ.

But Jesus didn't speak English. He also didn't write a single word in the Bible.
The Bible was written by men who heard a story from other men. Then it was translate by men to another language... more than once. And you still believe it is the verbatim truth and divine word of God. The fact is, it is the word of God filtered through the minds of a string of men. The only word of God that is the absolute truth would be the one in you head... not the one telling you to kill two more shots of Jaeger and go talk to the Russian bar girl with the big hooters.. the other voice.

This whole thread just reminds me of how happy I was when we booted Mindia from COA all those years ago. I think its hysterical how someone who was booted from a guild for training people and generally being an ass can be on his high horse in this manner. Granted, that was over a stupid game, but how someone acts in the anonymity of a game can really tell a lot about a person (specially when they prefer to dress up as a woman in the game)
I'm glad Mindia has found something that he's really into and excited about. He's just trying to share with us the excitement that he feels about Jesus. I respect this and encourage it. I think he's going about it the wrong way. Like so many fundamentalist Christians that I deal with, he's being abrasive for the sake of being abrasive.
I'd venture that Mindia has done very little research into other religions. I could be wrong in this, but I suspect not. If he had, I think he'd be much more open to some of the opinions that are being offered. If an individual simply restricts his rellgious reading to the Old and New Testament, then they really are leaving out a great deal of possible information.
The Catholic Church is largely to blame on how skewed the New Testament is, since they kept editing and rediting it to keep it in line with their political motives over the past 2000 years. That isn't to say that the content isn't good and morale, but its not the direct word of God -- its the interpretation of that word through the minds of dozens of Popes with political motives.
I did find it interesting that Mindia said that the Torah goes hand in hand with tatoos and body piercing -- since the Torah is the first five books of the Bible.
Fair? Mindia, you bring up fairness? You're talking about brainwashing children into believing in Christ, manipulating their minds at an early state. If you argue fairness, you have to show them every damn religion, otherwise how is it fair to the child?
