brawlage

So, wtf is up with all the brawls?

S. Carolina's Lou Holtz is leaving so S.C. can get Spurrier, but after the bowl game. Yesterday was his last regular game of the season (Clemson won of course) but in the 4th, a brawl breaks out. From the footage, Clemson started the entire thing when the quarterback for S. Carolina reached his arm up to get up off of the ground and was pounced on, and it kept going on. Although Clemson's player started it, it doesn't matter "who started it" once every single player has left BOTH benches to jump in this brawl. If I were Holtz, I'd tell S.C. to take themselves to the bowl game and to go fuck themselves. It's such a disgrace to see players act like that.

A brawl is a brawl, and no doubt people love watching them. But someone please tell me how much sense it really makes for a bunch of guys in PADS AND HELMETS to try to fight each other. What kind of damage can they do in that get-up?

Anyway, last game of the regular season, your coach is letting the position go a year before his contract is up in order to give SC the opportunity to get Spurrier, and his players do this to him. Granted, SC still doesn't have a great football program and probably won't for a long time to come. I just hate, that after everything Holtz has done for this team, this is how they send him off.

Tension was high already during the game because of USC being at the bottom of the Hill prior to the game. This was a big slight to Clemson, who always runs down the hill in their pregame, so everyone was pretty hot headed the whole game. I understand what you are saying about wanting to at least give Holtz a good send off, and the brawl was totally inapropriate. But I also understand the feelings running through the players minds having played football myself and going to USC. If someone punches your QB while he is on his back after getting tackled and you are already losing 29-7, you are going to retaliate, there is no question about it. I think it is stupid when players who havn't seen any time the whole game to come out on the field, but what did you expect? Carolina/Clemson fans -hate- each other, its as simple as that. Ever year they meet they are just waiting for the moment when someone throws the first punch to let everything out. I wouldn't be suprised next year at Williams Brice that a Carolina player throws the first punch and we have the same situation all over again. Its rediculous, disgraceful, and is going to happen, probably more so in the years to come. I wish they would just go out and play the game.

I'm not denying that players don't get hot-headed or that I don't understand why they do. It's just too bad that Holtz has to go out that way.
Clemson vs Carolina IS the biggest game here, the players hate each other, the fans do too. It's not a reason to disgrace your entire program and coach, and while I think Holtz understands his players better than anyone else...I'm sure he ripped all of them a new one afterwards. It's made headlines today...on a side note-I wonder what Spurrier is thinking.

You're right though, it will be interesting to see next year's game.

and did anyone see the basketball brawl? jesus christ...and the best part was when the cop came out onto the court with his little mini-bottle of pepper spray. I lol'ed!

Pads only protect typically your upper chest down to your mid ribs, and the helmet can be easily removed in a fight.

So stomach shots are still very possible, and when you're swinging and hit a helmet somewhere along the line that shit hurts.

This one time I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out, I was greatly dissappointed. Speaking of which I'm glad other sports of picking up the violence, with the Hockey strike my blood lust is through the roof.

Highschool hockey fights made me laugh, those kids are such pussies.

College hockey fights were a spectacle though.

Did any of you hear that stupid Clemson player's comments to the media after the game? He basically said, "Did you see that fight in the basketball game last night? At least we kept our fight on the field and between the two teams."

Good justification for being a total fuckwit.

I find it amusing that athletes get worked up by hecklers.

oh and...if you ever watch any of the comments that ANY college football players make it begs the question, which education are they REALLY getting?

Ummm. You're talking about the NPA remember?

They're not. Sports are a major cash cow for most big universities, so besides dumbass athletes (well not all, some can actually read) being allowed to major in *Physical Education,* I am willing to bet that a great deal of them get their grades handed to them.

Don't get me wrong I am not anti-athlete at all. I am a huge football fan, but let's be honest... those types of people aren't in college for knowledge... they aren't really there to earn a degree - they are there for a shot into the Pro's. Keep in mind I am mainly talking about Foot/Basket/Base ball...

Even in highschool kids who were "stars" in a sport got away with quite a bit...

For my highschool the "stars" got away with everything from not doing shit for work in classes, to disciplinary bullshit.

I didn't know what a detention was my freshman year of highschool...And if I didn't go it would never turn into a suspension like it should have for "normal people".

That stopped after I wasn't playing football anymore after that season...

Just goes to show where the priorities lie with big schools. The football coach has a salary of a million per year while the prof's are probably bringing in around 60k per year.

The *school* will spend money on a new stadium before it'll buy the Bio department a new electron microscope.

Hell, there have been high schools (in the past) that wanted to cut their music department to save their football program.

my alma mater, Santa Clara University, canceled the football program about 12 or 13 years ago because it rather spend money on other programs instead. The football program was consistently rank in the top 20 in division 2. The move pissed alot of people off at the time but in the long run i think the university is better because of it.

Yeah, do you know how much of that money the departments of those schools actually get? Here's a hint - not a hell of a lot.

Probably a lot of people who have never set foot on the campus... I get a kick out of some of the hard core Georgia fans around here... the guys with UGA lisences plates, shirts, hats, stickers all over the damn place... and yet probably couldn't tell you where Athens GA is.

Look at ESPN, the administrations of both Clemson and South Carolina have declared that as self-penalty for the brawl, they will decline any and all bowl bids. Yes, both teams are definitely bowl-eligable, and probably would've been invited. Nice move on their parts, to make it very clear to the atheletes that behavior like that won't be tolerated.
