I imagine it is stressful. Is there a reason that all of this is so time-sensitive?

My good friend, who had worked in the US for 10 or so years, had to leave the country because our company screwed up her green card application. It took 3 years for her to come back into the US. Note that this is a person who was currently employed, had an apartment, etc. All of the anti-immigrant phobia in this country has produced some pretty screwed up rules in my opinion.

Other than the fact that it's just gotten so hard to be so far apart no, it's not time sensitive.

We should've done our research off the start, but we had no idea it was a matter of years to take care of it.

Would he be able to apply for school now? That will bring it down to months rather than years.

He can sure, but the plan was to live with my dad to save money for it and the school he plans on going to is 2 hours south of my dad. Tuition is 64k also and he can't just show proof of funds for that large amount in such a short time which he would need to show for a student visa - I heard that it's one of the harder ones to get.

Yeah, he won't be able to get a student loan here either unless he has a cosigner who is an American citizen. Note that by cosigning, you assume all risk. If he defaults, they go after you. Can he get a scholarship in NZ to go to school here?

Not sure. I know the school he wants to go to requires sixth form completed for admission as minimum and he completed seventh with a high GPA so I don't think admission will be a problem for him. they also enroll monthly rather than every semester. i know that there are long term visitor visas too (i think it's the b-1?).. i wonder if temporarily that would be an option.

Why don't you just call the immigration office? They'd probably tell you what you need to know in like 5 minutes.

Well he's doing that end of it, there's the time zone difference etc that he's going to need to deal with. I imagine it won't be a simple 5 minute phone call because the us government doesn't make anything that easy >.<

I still say your only real option for a quick resolution to all this to find out exactly what's required and what is involved with getting him over here is to plunk down the few hundred bucks to spend a couple hours with an immigration lawyer. You're paying for his time and expertise, and so he should lay down for you exactly what the situation is, what hoops are required to go through, what you need to do, what forms are requierd, what steps are necessary, etc.

I am sure that any competant and trustworthy lawyer will then giv eyou the option of letting him continue to handle the next steps, which he will no doubt do better, faster, and more accurately than you could, but will, of course, charge you for, or let you go on and handle it yourself, and at least at that point you will KNOW what it is you need to do.

Again, I know you are completely against it, but why not temporarily move to NZ to be with him and see if your relationship is meant to be permanent. It's easy to fly back and visit your family and this way you won't have to be apart. While there let him work on immigrating, with the plan being eventually the two of you move back.

Anyways, I know long distance relationships suck. If you have no immediate plans to marry the guy, and his parents aren't very well of, it'll take a bit for him to get here.. I'd guess at least a few years.

Let me just clarify that he wants to move to the states either way. I wont go into details of our relationship so that people can just rip it apart in true NT style, so let's just focus on the fact that he's wanted to live in the states his whole life.

Just fly him over, get him a landscaping job or maybe he can open up his own burrito stand or wash cars until he gets some fake papers. The bounds of the law aren't really supporting him on this one and if anything, after a few years he can request for citizenship or if things are swell yall can get married.

what is NZ like? just curious, I don't know anything about it over there. I hope he works it out so he can come in a timely manner, especially so the two of you can be together sooner than later. there's some good advice here, you guys will work it out.
