I've given them all props, but based on the games I've seen I think RIGHT NOW Roy is the best safety in the game.

In his heyday, Rodney was a stud as was John Lynch, and Poli is certainly a force on a very good steelers team, as is Dawkins with the Eagles but if I had to choose one guy today to start at safety in the NFL it'd be Roy Williams.

Yes. Just think of it this way.

If you were a wide receiver, who would you least like to face? Ed Reed or Roy Williams? Williams has fucked some people up in the few years he has been around. The boy lays hits like no one else. Don't get me wrong, Ed Reed is a very good defensive back, but I'd like to have a bone crunching hitter like Roy Williams as my safety. It is a safety's job to tackle first rather than cover, because they are the last line of defense you have on the defense.

Ed Reed does not lay the wood like Roy, but that's a damn tough question, since Reed is such an awesome defensive playmaker.

Reed is about 5'9 and barely 200 pounds. Williams is 6' and over 235 so you are talking about them bringing different things to the table

Reed does awesome in a react D where he can read and pick the QBs pocket. Williams is a killer. While I love Ed and his playmaking, give me the killer since he will affect all aspects of the game.

I do think you don't respect Roy Williams man to man skills enough. Take a peek at what happened to T.O.s season last year.

I'd take Williams over Reed. I want recievers thinking about Williams before they catch the ball over the middle. "footsteps"

all the above being said, I think pretty much any team in the league would be ok with having Williams as a starting Strong Safety on their defense

for my personal preference, I like faster (sure tackling)cover guys at all DB positions

Ed Reed runs a 4.57 40.

As far as tackling, there is no comparison between the two. Roy Williams is the surest tackling safety in the league, and yes above Rodney, Poli, and even Lynch.

George Teague had 31 in 2001.

Ronnie Lott in his prime is better than any of the current safeties. He was a top flight corner before he got moved to safety, and he COULD cover like a corner, as well as hit as well or better than any player in the game today, including Williams. I got to watch a lot of Lott around here, and my gods, that man was unreal. No surprise he was a first ballot HOF'er.

shit even Atwater was as good if not better than those around now. Tho had that nasty habit of tryin to KILL every WR who played in that era.

merton hanks isn't in the same category as the really top flight safeties

He was pretty good, but I wouldn't put him in the top 25


Atwater was an amazing run stopper, and intimidating on short over the middle routes but bit on play fakes like a mofaka

Merton Hanks was like Ed Reed. Not a bruiser, but a playmaker.

Lynch over his first 7 or so years with that Tampa defense was also a monster.

The skies the limit for Williams. He's big, fast, and hits like a mack truck.
