TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's obsession with camera-equipped mobile phones has taken a bizarre twist, with mourners at funerals now using the devices to capture a final picture of the deceased.
"I get the sense that people no longer respect the dead. It's disturbing," a funeral director told the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper.
At one ceremony several people gathered round the coffin and took out their phones to photograph the corpse as preparations were made to begin a cremation, she was quoted as saying.
"I'm sure the deceased would never want their faces photographed," she said.
But others called it a form of a memento in the modern age.
"Some can't grasp 'reality' unless they take a photo and share it with others ... It comes from a desire to keep a strong bond with the deceased," social commentator Toru Takeda told the paper.

I know that im quite touchy about both of my parents deaths and i know that i think takin a picture of either of them all fucked up like they were is very offensive to me and not a photo i think anyone should have. Look at pics of them when they were alive . I guess it depends on the body. Neither of my parents looked good after they died so i wouldnt have tolerated it.

Not to get too personal, but didn't the mortician etc fix them up or was it impossible? If it was anything other than a pleasantly resting person, they should have done a closed casket, no?

It's creepy to take pictures of dead people. Why the hell would you want to remember some in their casket?
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

Weird story:
My Granny was a christian woman and had more class than anyone I've ever known. She and my Grandad were on vacation at their condo about 15 years ago, when a woman fell from her balcony 8 stories to the cement by the swimming pool and was killed instantly. She was yelling back and forth to her husband who was standing on the beach. (not yelling as in arguing-yelling so they could hear I guess) My Grandad and my Brother were on the beach as well when they saw her fall.
for some weird reason, that my Granny could never explain, (and she prayed about this over and over thinking she'd never get into heaven over it) she took a picture of that woman's body.
