Gamecube
So I need a system for my girlfriend and I and a couple other friends to fuck around on before Wii / PS3 is released.
I am buying a Gamecube tonight from EB for 69.99 (I don't want to fork over more for a console system as my time is usually taken up by WoW)
Tell me what games are worth buying:
Super Smash Brothers Melee = http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/action ... index.html

Re: Gamecube
Super Smash Brothers Melee = sweet christ, buy this game. especially if you have friends you will regularly have over for gaming. if you only buy one gamecube game, this should be it.
Mario Cart = it's okay. personally i thought the two-characters-on-each-kart idea was too gimmicky and kind of dumb, but it's still a pretty fun game. not even half as cool as smash brothers though.
Paper Mario = never played it. no comment.
Soul Calibur II = i tried this once, didn't do much for me. lacks the depth of smash brothers imho.
Mortal Combat Deception = never played it, but i imagine i would feel the same about it as soul calibur.
Mario Power Tennis = never played it. no comment.
Resident Evil 4 = roommate has it, been meaning to play it. no comment, other than that it seems they finally did away with the retarded camera angles that turned me off to the earlier installments.
Eternal Darkness = well-done game. all the shock value of the RE games, but not as gory. well-written, good play control, large variety of settings and some genuinely spooky shit. if you can find it for under $20, pick it up.
F Zero = didn't play it more than an hour or so, therefore i can't offer a good opinion on it.
Metroid Prime = pretty sweet game. can't hold a candle to Super Metroid, but definitely worth picking up anyway. there's also a Prime sequel for the 'cube, which is almost as good as this one.
Megaman X Collection = didn't play it. no comment. megaman was a great series, but i think the last one i played was megaman x2
other games worth looking at:
X-Men Legends & X-Men Legends: Rise of Apocalypse = enjoyable multiplayer games, especially if you and/or your friends are marvel comic book buffs. good selection of characters (they never let me play Havok, goddamnit!), good voice acting, and you can customize your heroes' attributes and skills as you level up.
the legend of zelda: windwaker (already mentioned) = some folks panned this game because of its "cutesy" cel-shaded graphics, but the play control is as tight as ever and despite their simplicity, the cel-shaded graphics are very stylized. plus, i can't remember the last time i enjoyed an end boss fight this much.
fire emblem = pretty strong game, if you like tactical RPGs like ogrebattle and FF:Tactics
timesplitters 2 = good halo-type game, lots of action. the multiplayer is pretty good, but the two-player co-op story mode can be quite engaging.

compost the rich
Mario Baseball and Soccer are both awesome.. I have both. Super Smash Brothers is definitely a good game too, but not that fun unless you have some worth competition. Super Monkey Ball games are TONS of fun~

I played ED after everyone went to sleep and I was playing in the dark. The game had me in a trance. I am definitely looking forward to going through it.
dunno if you're still interested, but you need to get resident evil 4. it's the best game on the gamecube. and when you beat it once you can play on pro mode and do a bunch of minigames too. pro mode is fucking hard... i'm trying to run through the whole game using only the pistol and the shotgun. it's probably the hardest gaming challenge i've had in a loooong time
yeah i think first run i did a Red 9 and a striker and a semi-auto rifle and a broken butterfly
but for replay value, i try to run through with different setups and so far the pistol/shotty is $$
if you just take a couple of guns from the beginning, then when they're maxed power somewhere in chapter 3, the game gets progressively harder and everything is harder to kill since your guns aren't getting better along with the enemies anymore. it even forces me to knife people in the knees so i can suplex them to save ammo
