I have been having pain in the middle of my back directly behind my sternum and in the front of my chest also. Sometimes it can hurt a little on my left and right sides but only sometimes.
Its been this way about a week, happened the day after I went to the gym, I played basketball, ran on a treadmill, and swam for a few laps.
My dad thinks it might be that I pinched a nerve? The pain is unbearable and I can't sleep without waking up every few hours to take advil (other pain medicines don't work?)

Welcome to the world of back pain. Unlike other parts of your body, if you hurt your back, it's 100 times worse and takes 10 times as long to heal.
As has been suggested, get to a doctor.
In addition, hot/cold therapy is a must if the pain is excruciating. Also, rest your back as much as you can. The best method for me is to lay flat. The less you bend and twist your back, the quicker it will heal, which in regard generally is not fast.
