EQ and Linux
Been reading a lot of conflicting information from the community...
Some say EQ/EQ II are both able to run on Linux.
Some say EQ I will run, but EQ II is an absolute no go.
Some say neither will run...
I've also heard that SuSE 10.2 and Gentoo are the best distros to run it/them.
What do you penguins think? Have any of you gotten it running?
Slackware is supposed to the be still using an older kernel version, so that might be an option?
I'm picking up a second HD today (Seagate 160 gig) for cheap and might as well get another distro up and running...
From what I've read, EQ II is a no go with Ubuntu... I guess OpenGL simply will not work...

I was able to run EQ on Slackware with no problem. Slackware 11 and below defaulted to a 2.4 kernel however 10 and 11 both came with a 2.6 kernel. Slackware 12 uses 2.6 as default. I was able to get EQ1 to run as well if not better in Slackware then windows but it took a bit of screwing around with the configs to do it. From what I understand EQ2 is a no go in Linux but you can probably get more info from the transgaming website.

As do the, literally, thousands of trojans, worms, keystroke loggers, spyware, and everything else... that infect that piece of shit OS. Oh.. and you get to pay 400 bucks to be their beta tester!
No, thanks. I'll stick to free, secure and stable.
Regardless if you pay for a copy of it or not, it’s still a piece of shit operating system.
Microsoft is like a used car dealership. They take used car, detail the inside, change the oil, put in some new speakers, maybe put in a new stereo – throw a coat of wax on it and sell it for twice the blue book value. It may look ‘newer,’ it may ‘feel’ different, but at its core it’s still the same piece of unreliable shit that your drove before.
I hate Microsoft with a venom.
Now, Linux isn’t perfect either – but it’s sure as hell exponentially more stable, secure, and reliable than Windows.
I wanted to see just how ‘good’ Ubuntu really is. Well, my neighbor is fairly computer illiterate. She uses her system for the typical doings of an average user. That is, she checks her email, downloads music, fucks around with her MySpace page, surfs the web, and writes papers for classes (she’s a grad student at SCAD – Savannah College of Arts and Design). She was having computer problems and I offered her my copy of Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn). Told her to give it a shot, if it didn’t work for her I’d come over and re-install Windows and set her back up. About an hour later she called me with a few installation questions… that was that. In no time she was back on the Web, doing everything she wanted/needed to do. Of course I had to go over and show her around the new OS (where this was, what that is, so on).
If this chick can install and run Ubuntu – ANYONE can. Not saying she’s dumb, but tech savvy she’s not.
She’s the exception though. Fact is Windows will be around for a very long time. Not because Linux can’t match up – because it can and does – but because most people are simply to lazy or scared to try something ‘new.’

Diekan, I understand your hatred for MS but really, you are full of shit. Most of the world is run on the Windows platform. I make my living working on MS products and frankly, without MS, small businesses would not be nearly as adaptable to change as they are now. MS OWNS the small the medium size business market because they make an affordable, extremely powerful and customizable OS that is easy to develop for and does just about anything you ask of it. Not only that but they also support it and really well I might add.
I'm sorry you got some spyware with your porn downloads but that's hardly MS's fault.

Linux is free, secure and stable only because you can't run half the shit you need on linux
trojans, worms, keystroke loggers are the bane of the ignorant and stupid
I can see why you'd have issues with them
The only reason there aren't more trojans, worms, etc. for Linux (or Macs for that matter) is because it's such a small piece of the market. Just about no one is going to waste their time finding the flaws and writing up programs for the 5% chance they might hit an infectable computer. Macs & Linux get to 25% of market share, and then you'll see the same types of viruses, trojans, etc. crop up, just based on different flaws.

I would have to say that Linux is actually far more prone to viruses and such hen windows simply because a large portion of the everyday people who use it dont have the slightest clue when it comes to security. I can tell you first hand having worked with many people who ran linux servers that they were very prone to attacks. IF you really understand how to secure your server and keep up to date with security patches you can have a very secure computer, much more so then any windows box. The biggest problem with windows is that there are many known security problems and MS just cant or wont keep up with the security patches. Open Source most certainly has the advantage of many more people working on fixing problems then MS does. MS is responsible for their entire OS, while each part of the Linux OS is done my a different group who can correct their own issues on their own.
The following I have to disagree with
There is very little I can not run under a linux system. What I can not run usually falls under the gaming category and even there I can run just about everything that I would have use for.
If there is a major downfall to Linux it would rest in the hardware manufacturers. The amount of proprietary drivers out there is really annoying. Many hardware companies just do not want to take the time to write Linux drivers while at the same time do not want to give up enough info for open source drivers to be made. This is getting better but anyone who uses laptops with Linux will probably have some horror story about getting everything up an running.
All of this probably makes no sense since I am half asleep but who knows it may have actually come out making sense.

Probably not, though you could probably use Gimp to do just about anything you would do with Photoshop. I would recommend either installing XP or just sticking it out with Vista though. Granted if your box ran faster then a Hippo it might actually run vista just fine.

Medium size business' are moving to Linux servers in droves. Many are moving to Apple desktops also in droves because it's easier to support and more stable. Apple is gaining share nicely.
MS charges ghastly amounts for software and undercuts smaller tech businesses to upgrade their own Monopoly. Hey, let's give billion dollar products away so our competition goes out of business! It's ok, we can leverage our desktop monopoly, gained through immoral and illegal OEM vendor deals.
On top of that, Vista is a total piece of shit. It's sad when one is a monopoly and even the inept don't want your crap spanky new OS.
Fuck monopolies and fuck those who support them and cheer the deaths of small companies.

Other than Vista being a piece of shit which is arguable, this is all bullshit.
No, medium sized businesses are NOT moving to Linux in droves, no they are not moving to Apple desktops in droves, no MS does not charge ghastly amounts for software.

Your arguments are the only thing that are bullshit. What the fuck, do you own MS and Toshiba stock or something?
Take a peek at how many Apache Servers are out there, and how many new Linux servers are out there. Take a look at Apples market share growth the last year.
MS still sells a lot, but fortunately as the clueless inept CIO types move out, then slowly their stranglehold selling bloatware will go downhill, too.
MS has never owned the web server market. You said medium size business' are moving to Linux servers in droves. It's not true. Show me where MS has been losing significant market share to Linux based boxes for anything OTHER than web servers which MS never had a market share of to begin with. People are not running their accounting, their email/calendaring, basic productivity, etc on Linux OR OSX servers except for in rare cases. I work with thousands of small to medium size businesses and I've seen less than 10 unix boxes in place and in most cases those boxes served specific purposes, had been decommissioned or were sitting on some high and mighty geeks desk doing NOTHING productive for the business.
Kinda like Canadians and politics, I guess....
No, I have no illusions that MS dominates the market. I however see much more competition and potential today, versus 2004 or 2002.
Linux isn't the answer on the desktop, but hopefully it can undercut NT/2003 more and more.
