well we're all holed up, went to the supermarket and it was a mad house, they had to turn people away when they closed at 1 and they were checking people out in the bakery, pharmacy, floral dept., etc......
my across the street neighbor decided to trim all ofhis large trees about 3 hours ago, and they are now loaded on a huge flatbed trailer across the street, stacked around 10 feet long and 10 feet high.... hope they move it

Re: i do not like Ike
another fun fact, the seawall in Galveston, that was built because of a terrible hurricane, is approximately 17 feet tall, that's above sea level, and the storm surge from the Ike, as of a bout 3 hours ago, had raised the water level of the gulf at the wall by approcimately 17 feet!!!!!! and it's supposed to get 3 feet higher... oops.

Re: i do not like Ike
it's not gonna do much to houston... galveston and texas city are probly fucked...
my uncle travis and cousin mike are staying behind at their houses to guard them from all the robbing and looting that's gonna take place afterwards. it's insane
this happened before during my mother's childhood and her house was ruined (in texas city) by 4' of water
this could be really bad for my family and i'm pretty worried. seriously wishing the best for y'all down there

My friend in Houston text messaged me saying:
Hurricane: 0
Me: 1
So I guess Houston was ok!

it shattered some windows in the high rises and turned into a category 1.
it took a slight turn north from texas city and my 70 year old uncle with macular degeneration that stayed behind to "guard" the home is still okay. the storm surge ended up only being 13' instead of 20-22' and only a couple places like surfside beach and freeport got flooded i think. my cousin that stayed behind in galveston said it was pretty devastated and a lot of the piers broke free, but it could've been a lot worse. about a six month cleanup estimated
got lucky and i'm really glad

holy shiz
hey all, we are now in Austin, tx, where we should have come from the beginning...
i live near reliant stadium and the innerloop area and south of houston to galveston got wtfpwned
we had a 4-5 story tree fall into our backyard and miss my daughters bedroom by a round 1 foot. it smashed my 3 year olds wood swingset to matchsticks... it was a looong night. we still didn't have power after 48 hours and were almost 0 on water pressure so we bailed out.
looks like a tornado went through and wrecked every tree in the city, and galveston/south houston is even worse.
i hope everyone's family is allright

My uncle sent me this collection of pictures, detailing the devastation:
http://www.tpicks.com/pictures_people_have_sent_me.htm
The house my wife and I were married in 3 months ago is totally fine... it was in one of the nice areas of Galveston and apparently all of those houses are undamaged. I guess when you pour $2m into a house, you build it right.
Still... it's freaking scary to see gas stations I stopped at, restaurants I ate at and stores I shopped in... completely destroyed. My grandfather got his shrimp boats up on land before this all went down but they still got pretty fucked up. Have we seen any numbers on this yet? Is it worse than Andrew? I mean... the 4th largest city in the nation is partially underwater. That can't be good.

Re: i do not like Ike
those are amazing pics, some were so bizarre i immediately thought they were photoshopped.. i don't know if it's the area you're talkign about, but we had friends with a house on the Bolivar Peninsula and all that is left is the foundation, it was a 4 bedroom house, and it just vanished, everything around it too, the local grocery store, everything was just wiped off the map
the thing that trips me out is how long power has been off for large portions of Houston and the surrounding area
in one of those pics, where the wave is hitting behind the stop lights, that seawall is 17 feet tall and the stop lights are eailsy 12 feet, thats crazy

Even up in Columbus Ohio the power has been out in some parts since Sunday. They are estimating some parts of the grid won't be restored for another week. All we got were some sustained gale force winds.

Re: i do not like Ike
well, we are heading to my father in laws today, back to houston, he has power. we are setting up base camp there and will go tonight to see if we have power or not.
as of yesterday less than half of the homes/businesses in Houston are restored to power.... 1 week and 1 million people without power!!!! we have heard that you still can't find perishable food at grocery stores unless you line up early in the morning, this is madness.
