3 hours and counting trying to install Mass Effect for PC
Bioware sucks fucking cock.
This is by far the most frustrating install attempt I've ever tried from a retail copy of a game. I should have just fucking pirated it to save myself the trouble.
The installer is a complete failure. It's apparently a widespread problem. Their piece of shit DRM is the cause and they're fucking morons for having it. And people wonder why no one wants to buy their shit when they enforce these ridiculous measures to "protect" their games. (Which do absolutely NOTHING but fuck with their legitimate customers.) No copyright protection has EVER worked, yet they still fucking put it there like the retards that they are.
I'm now forced to manually extract each fucking archive and place it in the file structure required to run it properly and it's taking fucking forever. This one file is failing CRC and now I have to keep retrying to copy it to my HDD from the DVD and hope it passes sooner or later. (It usually does, I've had to do this in the past with other things)
This is fucking bullshit. They're lucky the game is so ridiculously awesome or I would ram this DVD up their ass personally and demand my money back.

That's insane. I'd demand compensation anyway even if you do get it installed. That's just ridiculous.

Installed no problem for me. True, the DRM sucks cock, but I had zero install issues. Oh, and yes, it was installed with AVG running, etc, so if anti-virus was going to bitch, it certainly would've.
Perhaps you just got a bad copy?

5 hours later I finally did it.
I'm proud of myself after all that effort. Just to fucking spite them I'm keeping my CDKEY, selling it, and going to use a cracked EXE. Fuck them in their ass.

Re: 3 hours and counting trying to install Mass Effect for PC
yeah you must be doing something wrong. if you get cyclic redundancy check failures then you need to buy a new CD drive because that happened to me all the time if the disc had even one tiny single scratch on it and now everything's fine after i replaced the drive.
mass effect sucks anyways, don't play it. it's fun for a few hours

Re: 3 hours and counting trying to install Mass Effect for PC
No, I'm not doing something wrong.
You don't put a fucking DVD in a drive and "do something wrong".
It's Securom which is EA's pathetic attempts at preventing piracy. It's incompatible with most drives out there on the market. It pulls data off improperly decoded as a result of their bullshit. So it fails the CRC.
I know what I'm doing and the problem is solely on their shoulders.

I'm sure all of those problems are from user-error too.

Re: 3 hours and counting trying to install Mass Effect for PC
Another reason why I prefer console gaming now.
Re: 3 hours and counting trying to install Mass Effect for PC
On the bright side, I have a temporary loneliness bandaid for a bit now.

Re: 3 hours and counting trying to install Mass Effect for PC
I enjoyed Mass Effect quite a bit. Good story, and the FPS type gameplay was pretty decent, actually. Certainly much better suited to mouse & keyboard than those stupid analog thumb-sticks on a console controller.
Honestly, I just can't get into console gaming, playing any amount of time with those controllers and my hands cramp up into agonizing balls of pain.

Scroll down to the reviews and ratings
2000+ 1 star ratings as a result of their DRM. Fuck E.A. right in their ass. I hope it cost them money, and a lot of it.
Edit:
This guy nailed it, 100%.

2000+ 1 star ratings as a result of their DRM. Fuck E.A. right in their ass. I hope it cost them money, and a lot of it.
Edit:
See those older 5-star reviews from 2006 (two years before the game was released)? Well, they had a reason to be excited. Spore was supposed to be a revolutionary experience, combining multiple genres while concentrating on evolution and genetics.
Fast forward two years and here we have the finished product, ready to be installed on our hard drives.
First of all, the game incorporates a draconian DRM system that requires you to activate over the internet, and limits you to a grand total of 3 activations. If you reach that limit, then you'll have to call EA in order to add one extra activation. That's not as simple as it sounds, since when you reach that point EA will assume that you, the paying customer, are a filthy pirating thief. You will need to provide proof of purchase, reasons why the limit was reached, etc, etc (it has all happened before with another recent EA product, Mass Effect). EA, of course, is not obligated to grant you that extra activation or even provide that service. In a couple of years they might very well even shut down the general activation servers, because "it's not financially feasible" to keep them running. What you will be left with is a nice, colorful $50 coaster. And you will be required to pay for another copy/license if you want to continue playing.
This basically means that you are actually RENTING the game, instead of owning it. The game WILL stop to function in the future. That's inevitable, because even if EA keeps the activation servers going, there IS going to be a time when EA will simply cease to exist because of financial issues or federal laws (like most businesses eventually do).
Second, the game was dumbed down to oblivion. Evolution doesn't even matter anymore. For example, you can add as many legs to a creature as you want, but the multi-legged creature won't be any faster than a single-legged one with higher leg stats. This gameplay element makes "creating" your creatures entirely pointless (cosmetic only, because everything is based on stats), and brings you about the same amount of excitement as dressing up a plastic doll.
This guy nailed it, 100%.

None of those problems with console gaming really. *shrug*
Fuck a PC for gaming on.

Re: 3 hours and counting trying to install Mass Effect for PC

Re: 3 hours and counting trying to install Mass Effect for PC
I must say. Mass Effect was worth the trouble I went through, though...I am still kind of sore at E.A. for the shit I had to go through to work a fucking legitimate copy of a game I paid for that they enforced some draconian copyright protection on.
They just don't get it.
