It's because his style isn't very accessible. I've always thought of him as one of the gods of technical playing. But a lot of people find that pretentious or too busy to enjoy, unfortunately

However, it's not surprising that a great musician is un-loved. You gotta take the popularity thing back to Mozart, who was universally hated for his entire life and buried in a mass grave. Then they realised "oh shit, he was a genius"

I think it's more because people prefer to sing along to a song, than just listen and appreciate

vast majority of people aren't particularly musical, or know about the technical side of things, it's all about a melody you can sing, or a beat you can dance to
