I'm no fan of illegals after going through the process legally, but the guy exhibited pure stupidity and a lack of self restraint. Also, I'm not sure why the focus is so much on how they're illegal - it says right in there that they have visa applications pending.. it's completely legal to be in the states during your pending application depending on if you filed while you were here. If every person who trespassed on property that did not belong to them was killed for it, we would have a whole lot fewer people in this county. This individual has every right to defend his property, however he should expect that he will be held liable for his actions against any individual regardless of whether they are an illegal or a us citizen.

How would any citizen be treated if they held at gun point every person that came to their front door uninvited? Some 6 year old kid sneaks into my back yard to steal an orange off of my tree, am I within my rights to pull out a shotgun and blow him away? How about if it's an adult? I don't like illegals, here in the DC area it's a growing problem. We have had entire communities up in arms because of day laborer issues and it's not getting any better. Something needs to be done to stop people who are illegal from doing whatever they so choose, but harming them is not the answer.

I think that the guy was within his right to detain them, but only if he called someone right away and the situation was handled quickly. I don't think that anyone should have the right to harm trespassers unless they are obviously committing violence. But detaining until police can be called and/or removing said trespassers should be within any citizens rights.
