The software it runs on is free. The server I host it on is anything but free :)

though, hosting has significantly come down in prices over the years...

Back when it was really busy and I had the NT arcade going and all that shit, I was paying $30-50 a month for the hosting. That'll buy a year's worth for a low-bandwidth phpBBB forum site these days.

Plus there's the time that the admins have to spend maintaining everything... all the smilies, custom graphics, database maintenance, security patches... it adds up and gets really lame, really fast.
