Aside from D&D Online and Vanguard, what are other MMORPGs that are in the works?

Middle Earth is gonna crash and burn just like all the Asheron Call games designed by Turbine. I can't believe they got approved for the license. :/

To be honest, I think WoW is just about a flawless MMO. I just get bored once I get into the end game. I'm sure when I buy the next one I'll play it till max lvl then quit two months later.

Warhammer is now owned by Mythic, the DAOC people.

Fuck them from taking it away from Climax. You just KNEW a game would kick ass coming from a development company called Climax.

Honestly, until the genre switches into a true next generation, I doubt anything will hold my attention too long. WOW is the perfect first gen MMO clone and is as good as one can get stealing the best parts of the other MMOs. Someone needs to make something really fuckin original and kick ass now to get some of the older gamers back.

Lyion hit it square on the head...

Fuck these shit-ass MMO's now. They're all clones of eachother and are way too fucking simple.

WoW is an MMO for kids. I want an MMO that will challenge me the whole way through.

Actually, WoW and EQ2 are considered 2nd gen. Vanguard is the only one I know of that's being called 3rd gen.

But the Conan and Warhammer ones do sound interesting.

Well this shits all over any hope I had that Warhammer may have any resemblance to the groundbreaking ideas the original group worked on for over 2 years at climax.

Is this the same Warhammer MMORPG I have heard about in the past from another developer?
No. That game has ceased development and the developer has moved on to other projects. This will be a next-generation MMORPG that will serve as the standard bearer for both Mythic and Games Workshop.

I want a challenge not a level ladder climb who can play for 24 hours a day to level.

I just don't have the time anymore. :(

Dittos. I have hopes for NWN 2. If it can get back to the small group fun feel of pen n paper without the social caste level climb of competition and cloneliness, I'll be happy.

I was fooled by NWN 1, dare I give them another chance?

On a side not, mods aside, TOEE was a much better game than NWN was.

I was too, Zan. NWN was a huge letdown for me. I enjoyed TOEE and played through it bugs and all.

I'll give NWN2 a chance, but I'm expecting it to suck ass. They really need to look at many other games out there and envelop the best of whats there into NWN2, like Blizzard did with WOW.

The thing that pissed me off the most about TOEE was that the interface and game mechanics were the best of any D&D property, but there were so many bugs and the story was just lame.

It's always one or the other with D&D games these days.

Its a shame the guildwars crew didnt license the AD&D system. I bet that would've kicked ass.

hrm

I would have considered EQ1 2nd generation(with DAoC, AO, etc), with UO being the 1st generation of MMO

I know it's Sigil stating it. But I took this off their FAQ's.

1.4.1 What do you mean by a ‘third generation MMORPG’?

We usually use the word ‘generation’ more like an 'era'... when a group of games come out around the same time, were in development mostly around the same time, and therefore couldn't use each other as reference nearly as much as older games, we call that a generation.

Under that definition, M59, UO, AC, EQ, etc. were all first generation. They pretty much just had MUDs to look back on and be inspired.

When you get to AC 2, SW:G, EQ 2, and WoW, all of the developers are able to look back not only at MUDs but also at what worked and didn't work with the first generation of MMOGs.

Vanguard will have the advantage of looking back at both generations, learning again from what worked and didn't work with all of those games. In other words, we will be able to analyze EQ 2, WoW, etc. too.

That doesn't mean our definition of 'generation' is 'right' or 'official', but that is the rationale we use when we refer to Vanguard as a 3rd generation massively multiplayer role-playing game.

I thought EQ/UO/AC were 1st gen.

AO/Daoc/Horizons/Shadowbane were 2nd gen.

EQ2/Wow were 3rd with some stragglers still coming
