My computer is fucked!!

Post by Tadpole »

Whenever I go to open a program on my desktop or from the start up menu, something along these lines appears...

Windows cannot find 'C:/Documents and Settings/Mike/Desktop/Firefox Setup 1.0.6.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To seach for a file, click the Start button, and then Click Search.

For some reason, I can open the IE from the start menu, but nothing else. I have no idea what the problem is...I can't even use SpyKiller or anything.

I DL'd FireFox about 30 mins ago and can't even open it and install. This shit is pissing me off...any ideas?

:dunno:

PS -- I can't even do a system restore. :cry:

Unless you have Win 2K then try the following (if you have 2K its more complicated)

Start in safe mode then click start ---> Run and type msconfig and ok

look for an entry in the startup for that file and uncheck it, reboot

run regedt32 and look at this registry path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\exefile\shell\open\command

make sure it has:
"%1" %*

as the value for that key (value name is "(Default)" )

if you cant run regedt32 from start->run then do this first:

start->run : cmd
copy c:\windows\system32\regedt32.exe c:\regedt32.com

then to open regedt32 do:
start->run : c:\regedt32.com

it sounds like a virus that messes up the .exe association.

harsh that you cant run copy from command line :(

maybee try those steps from safemode (hold down left control key while reboot and choose safe mode) and log on as administrator.

You'll have to run anti-virus from a disk and/or clean install, most likely.
