Hope they like seeing him eat up their salary cap at the rate of almost three-quarters of a million dollars per year, per point and rebound that he averages... combined. But hey, they can always hope that the pressure in Seattle was just too much for him and that he'll benefit from the laid back, player-friendly atmosphere in New York.
To recap: Thomas has a promising young center, whom he trades for a declining power forward, with a more expensive contract, and a low draft pick. In order to compensate for the glaring hole in the middle he goes out and ridiculously overpays for Jerome James.

Here's my theory: Just before the Sonics play the Spurs in the second round of the playoffs, James' agent comes to him and says, "Listen, if you can put together two, three decent games against the limping Duncan, I'm pretty sure Isiah will bite. It doesn't have to be much, really, and you don't have to sustain it. Just enough to make him think he sees something, you know what I'm saying?"
The Unintended Consequence: The Malik Rose deal looks like pure genius by comparison.
Bill Simmons on espn.com wrote:To Michael Finley, who is in danger of being dumped in Dallas with the Amnesty Clause -- which is so confusing that ESPN.com's Marc Stein wrote 25 columns about it in the last three weeks and I still can't understand it. The question remains: Why waive a solid player with a ridiculous contract to save a few bucks when you could simply trade that ridiculous contract to the Knicks?
