When 1/4 of your income is going to retiree benefits, you're hamstrung and uncompetitive, regardless of the price of outsourcing or cost reductions. This is due to the unions.

The UAW throttled GM and Ford for outrageous benefits and retirement for their workers at a time when the sky was the limit and people didn't regularly live 30+ years after retirement. They continued to push and push, even when the Big Three were in disarray due to oil prices, stagnation, and international competition.

Today, both companies aren't very solvent due to the massive bills they have due to these packages. I expect both to crater in the next 10 to 15 years, and the fallout due to the hundreds of thousands of retired general laborers getting outrageous benefits suddenly being left high and dry will be on the taxpayers, yet again.

The UAW got what it wanted. They are going to eat the entire US auto industry. Sayonara.

It comes from a sense of entitlement. Some smuck who dropped out of high school can't stand the fact that someone with a college education makes 40 grand a year more.
