personally I value a lot of the friends i met in EQ a great deal, and I'm not quite ready to quit EQ yet.
Hey, you just summed up why EQ sucks. They can do whatever they want to you, and you'll keep coming back for more. How many expansions that have been astoundingly underwhelming have you bought, yet with the impending release of another one, you wait with cash in hand and optimism? It mirrors a beaten-wife.
I actually don't think people will be coming back, for the most part. Up til now, there's really been no viable alternative for people to move to, save DAOC I guess, and when it came out EQ had not yet entered its death spiral. As it is now though, look at the state of CS, look at the horror show of every post-velious expension, with the partial exception of POP, etc. Even POP had artificial progression cockblocks and vast reams of unfinished content even months into the lifetime of the expansion. I have heard NOTHING good about GoD so far, and haven't been regreetting my retirement in the least.
As for PVP, I personally have ZERO interest in any game that has open PVP. Instanced PVP, either duels or voluntary instanced team/guild battles with nothing but pride at stake are fine. Allowing some random twit to sneak up while I'm XPing and wait for me to get low HP/Mana from killing mobs and then slaughter me is NOT. Nor is requiring PVP or entering PVP enabled zones to get the "best" of anything: gear, spells, whatever, since that makes entering such areas no longer voluntary, if I want my character to be the best he can be.
My main objection is the question of time/effort. In a FPS if you die, who cares. In a MMO, however, that death costs me something: maybe XP, maybe items, maybe coin, certainly (often significant) time. Since no one likes negative impacts, playing in a PVP-type environment requires a certain level of constant paranoia that I simply do not find in any way fun whatsoever, when I'm trying to play a game for FUN. Even with the easy death system in WOW, if someone were to kill me, I would still have a 5-10 minute run to my corpse, possibly need to re-break the camp I was in, etc. All that time could have been used for stuff I was ENJOYING doing, not for CRing because some random ass decided it'd be fun to kill me. Sorry, but that's annoying and not remotely enjoyable.
I don't care if there's a PVP-enabled server where people can kill and gank to their heart's content, as long as it is not one I have to play on. Indeed, I applaud it, cause usually the more hardcore PVP nuts are the raving assholes you don't want to play with anyway.

GoD is the only expansion i can honestly say so far i haven't gotten my fair 15 dollars or whatever out of, maybe LoY
and while my statement sums up some problems with EQ, it also sums up everything that is still good about the game-- the good people i met playing it, i don't view spending time with them as anything as harmful or painful as being a beaten wife...still some good laughs to be had even if the new content isnt great.
